Free Wi-Fi in Japan for visitors: where it exists, how sign-up works and where it falls short

Japan has plenty of free Wi-Fi, but each network usually wants its own registration and many cut you off after a time limit. This guide shows where it helps and where you need your own data.

Коротко

  • Japan has free Wi-Fi at airports, major stations, convenience stores, some subway lines and tourist sites, but most networks ask you to register by email or social login.
  • The Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect app lets you sign up once and connect automatically at supported spots, and it has supported OpenRoaming since February 2025.
  • Free Wi-Fi works as a supplement only: it needs you to stay put, it times out and it is not safe for banking, so keep an eSIM for the time you are on the move.

Where you can find free Wi-Fi in Japan

Japan has no single national free Wi-Fi service. It is a patchwork of separate networks run by airports, rail companies, shops and local governments, so it helps to know which kinds of places usually offer it.

МестоЧего ожидатьUsual catch
АэропортыFree Wi-Fi in the terminals of the main airportsRegistration needed, sessions can expire
Major stationsSome stations and rail operators run free networksOften only the concourse, not every platform or train
Convenience stores and chainsBig chains and cafés run their own free networksYou sign up through each chain's page
Subway linesSome lines or stations in large citiesTunnel sections may have no signal
Tourist sitesTourist information centres, museums and some shopping districtsSlow when crowded, short sessions

Availability changes, so treat this as a guide rather than a promise. Look for Wi-Fi stickers and signs at shop entrances and in stations.

How sign-up usually works

On most networks you pick the Wi-Fi name on your phone, a registration page opens in the browser, and you enter your details and accept the terms. An English version is usually offered.

  • Email: enter an address and wait for a confirmation link or code in your inbox.
  • Social login: some networks accept Google, Facebook or LINE instead of an email address.
  • Time limits: many cut the session after anywhere from tens of minutes to a few hours, and you must reconnect.
  • Separate for every network: registering at an airport does not cover a convenience-store network, so you sign up again each time.

A practical tip is to keep a spare email address just for Wi-Fi registrations, so your main inbox does not fill up with promotions.

At airports and big stations, some networks have counters or QR signs that speed up connection. If the registration page does not appear, try opening the browser on a plain http site, or switch Wi-Fi off and on again.

The Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect app and OpenRoaming

Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect is an app backed by JNTO and provided by NTT Broadband Platform. Visitors register once and the phone then joins supported free spots automatically. Since February 2025 it also supports OpenRoaming, a standard that lets phones join participating networks automatically over an encrypted connection rather than an open one.

  1. 1Установите до вылетаDownload the app from the App Store or Google Play while you are still on home Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Register and allow permissionsFollow the in-app steps and allow the Wi-Fi profile to be added in iOS or Android settings.
  3. 3Check the supported spotsLook in the app to see whether the airports or stations on your route are supported. Not every spot is.
App features and the list of supported spots can change, so confirm with the official app or the JNTO website. Last checked October 2026.

The 00000JAPAN emergency Wi-Fi

After a large disaster, carriers open a free network named 00000JAPAN (five zeros). It is open and unencrypted, so use it only for essentials such as messaging family or reading alerts, and not for anything financial. It appears only when it has been activated, not in normal times.

JNTO's Safety tips app sends earthquake and weather alerts in several languages. It is easier to install it before the trip.

Staying safe on open networks

  • Check for HTTPS and do not type card details or passwords on pages you are unsure about.
  • Avoid banking apps and transfers on public Wi-Fi; use your eSIM data instead.
  • Turn off auto-join for open networks and switch off file sharing.
  • Ask staff to confirm the network name, since fake networks with similar names exist.
  • You do not need a VPN to reach Google, LINE or Instagram in Japan, though one can add protection on an open network.

Why free Wi-Fi alone is not enough on the move

Free Wi-Fi works when you stand still, but a real trip is mostly movement. Walking from a station to a restaurant or meeting point, you have no signal, must re-register on every network and get cut off when a session ends. Maps, translation, LINE and ride apps need a steady connection.

An eSIM installed before you fly gives you mobile data the moment you land. Keep free Wi-Fi as a supplement for large downloads. For the full comparison of connection options, read “First Trip to Japan: Preparation Checklist and How to Choose Internet”.

A workable routine is eSIM first, with free Wi-Fi at the hotel, airport or a café for big downloads and photo uploads.

So set up the eSIM before flying and treat free Wi-Fi as a bonus when you are stationary, not as your main plan.

Вопросы и ответы

Do I need a Japanese phone number to use free Wi-Fi?+

Generally no. Many networks accept an email address or social login, but conditions differ, so check each network's registration page.

Is free Wi-Fi in Japan fast enough for video?+

It depends on the place and how many people share it. Some spots are fast enough, but crowded ones are often slow and time-limited.

Will I see 00000JAPAN on a normal day?+

No. It is opened only during large disasters, and as an open network it should be used for essentials only.

Can I rely on free Wi-Fi alone for the whole trip?+

Possible if you mostly stay in one place, but if you move around a lot an eSIM is more convenient and safer.
