What Naples is like on a phone

Most people in Naples do not stay in Naples: they use it as the launch point for Pompeii, Capri and the cliff villages of the Amalfi Coast. The city itself is two different experiences — a dark, tight-laned old quarter and a wide-open seafront — and the connection reflects that. Coverage across town is broadly usable, but the stacked-up old buildings along Spaccanapoli make both signal and position more restless here than elsewhere.

Capodichino (NAP) is unusually close to town, with the Alibus running to the central station or down to the port in a short ride. High-speed trains come into Napoli Centrale beside Piazza Garibaldi, and arrivals by sea use the Stazione Marittima, or Molo Beverello for the fast boats to the islands. Switch the eSIM on in the terminal, or on deck before the ship ties up, because your first task is calling a car or finding the gate for the next sailing. The ride into town is short and stays inside the built-up area, so it holds a connection the whole way.

The seafront districts — Chiaia, the Lungomare — are the most open and the easiest to use in the whole city. In the old quarter, narrow lanes with tall buildings pressed together unsettle both speed and position. Metro Line 1, with its art stations, works on the platforms and cuts out in the tunnels. Vomero, up on its hill above the rest of town, holds a connection well and looks out over the whole bay. Taking a fast boat out to the islands, the signal fades gradually as the shore recedes and returns as you close on the far harbour.

What a day here costs in data

A Naples day tends to split in two: hours in the old quarter with the map open constantly because the lanes tangle, and hours spent getting out of town, re-checking train or boat departures several times over. Add site tickets, translating a pizzeria menu and photographing the bay. Most travellers use about 1 to 1.5GB a day, and an Amalfi Coast day runs higher because you keep re-checking the route and the next bus while you are moving.

• Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli — The long straight cut through the old city has tall buildings hard against it on both sides, so the map pin slides easily; count the side streets and use church names as markers.
• Vomero — Reached by funicular and sitting above everything else, this is where a video call or an upload of bay photographs goes most smoothly.
• Chiaia and the Lungomare — An unobstructed promenade along the water keeps things steady, which makes it a comfortable place to work through a morning or call home at dusk.
• Quartieri Spagnoli — A grid of steep lanes on the slope with washing strung overhead; speed is workable but your position is often a block or two out.

Day trips out of the city

• Pompeii — The Circumvesuviana suburban line comes and goes along the way, and the site itself is wide open ground shared by thousands at once, so midday speeds sag; download the site plan and any audio guide before you go through the gate.
• Capri — Fast boats leave from Molo Beverello, and out in the bay away from both shores the connection drops far enough that a picture message will not send. On the island the harbour and the hill town are fine, while the cliff-backed stretches of coast hold much less.
• The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento — The cliff road twists through a run of short tunnels, so service comes and goes in cycles, and villages tucked into a ravine hold less than the points that face straight out to sea.
