What Milan is like on a phone

People come to Milan for different reasons: a meeting or a trade fair out at Rho for two or three days, a single night before a train to the lakes or over the Alps, or a serious day of shopping. The network in town feels quicker and smoother than the old cities further south, simply because the streets are wide and much of the building stock is modern. What slows things down here is timing rather than location — the moment a fair empties out, or the rush hour crush at Centrale.

And the canal bars of the Navigli on a Friday night are the textbook case of one cell carrying a whole neighbourhood.

What a day here costs in data

A Milan day spends data differently from a sightseeing city: email, documents, short video calls and ride-hailing rather than a map held open all day. Someone here to work or to exhibit typically uses about a gigabyte a day, but if you join meetings from the hotel without touching the Wi-Fi, or tether a laptop for hours, that climbs fast. A shopping day sits lower, though the photos sent home for a second opinion add up.

Districts travellers ask about

• Duomo and the Galleria — The densest point in the city all year round; through the middle of the day speeds sag because everyone is standing in the same piazza, while up on the cathedral roof it opens out and works better.
• Brera — Cobbled and narrow but not hemmed in by height, so it holds up across the quarter — a good place to sit with a coffee and clear an hour of work before the day starts properly.
• Navigli — From early evening the towpaths on both banks fill right up and speeds fall away even with full bars, so call your ride home before every bar empties at the same moment.
• Porta Nuova and Isola — Modern towers with generous open space between them; this is where a video call home or an afternoon of laptop work goes most smoothly of anywhere in the city.

Day trips out of the city

• Lake Como — Lakeside towns like Varenna and Bellagio are fine, but once the ferry is out in the middle under the shadow of the steep slopes it weakens and can drop altogether. Check sailings on the official source rather than an old screenshot, as the timetable shifts with the season.
• Bergamo Città Alta — The funicular climbs inside the old walls and dips briefly on the way up, but at the top, where you are looking out over the whole plain, it works better than down in the lower town.
• Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands — Small boats run out to the islands from Stresa, and on the water away from either shore the connection thins to the point where a photo will not upload; ashore on the island it comes back to normal.
