What Valencia is like on a phone

Valencia tends to keep people longer than they planned, because it has an old quarter, a city beach and a long park laid along a riverbed that was diverted. The mix of visitors is broad: families here for the sand, cyclists who spend their days in the park, and remote workers on longer stays. Coverage across town is even and most streets are wide enough for the signal to move freely. Where it feels different is the old lanes of El Carmen and the ground floors of old stone buildings.

Manises (VLC) connects by metro lines 3 and 5, a short ride to stations in the centre. High-speed trains use Joaquín Sorolla; conventional services arrive at the Estació del Nord right in town. On the metro run in there are tunnel sections where the signal cuts and returns at each station.

Wide streets and the Turia gardens running through the middle keep things good and continuous, and the open riverside ground around the City of Arts and Sciences is comfortable too. El Carmen, with its narrow lanes and old buildings packed together, puts your map pin out and costs some speed. Malvarrosa beach is open and works well, except on a summer afternoon when the sand is full. Inside the big iron-and-glass central market the speed swings with how many people are in the hall.

A day here often costs less than in a city where you cross town repeatedly, because many people cycle the park and open the map only in bursts. It rises when you are finding a restaurant, booking a tour and uploading beach photos — about a gigabyte a day overall. Remote workers use considerably more, especially if they join calls from the flat without touching the Wi-Fi or work from cafés where the Wi-Fi is unreliable.

• Ciutat Vella and El Carmen — Crooked old lanes with high walls that slide the map pin, especially at night; steer by the old city gate towers instead.
• Ruzafa — Cafés and restaurants on a reasonably wide grid, and one of the better parts of town to sit and work or take a call that must not drop.
• City of Arts and Sciences — Open ground beside reflecting pools and white shells; good coverage, and the sort of place where you can upload the shot the moment you take it.
• Malvarrosa and Cabanyal — A long beach beside a quarter of old tiled houses; on summer afternoons the sand fills and the speed drops, so leave long clips until you are back in town.

Day trips out of the city

• Albufera lagoon — Small boats push out into a lagoon ringed by rice fields with nothing tall anywhere, so the connection thins as you leave the bank; note your return time before you step aboard.
• Xàtiva — The train crosses farmland with a steady connection, but walking up to the ridge-top castle the slope on the far side from the town holds noticeably less.
• Peñíscola — A fortified town on a rock pushed out into the sea; the walk around the walls is open and holds well, while the tight, curving lanes inside them put your position out.
