eSIM app: do you need one to use an eSIM?

You do not need an app to use an eSIM; the phone's own Settings install it. Here is what an eSIM app actually is, how app-based and web-based buying compare, and how to check data without one.

eSIM app: do you need one to use an eSIM?

Quick answer

  • No. You do not need an app to use an eSIM. Your phone's operating system (iOS or Android) installs the eSIM profile from Settings when you scan a QR code. Provider apps are a convenience for buying, topping up and tracking usage, but they are optional. What you really need is a compatible, unlocked phone, a QR code and Wi-Fi during setup.
  • esimonline.asia has no mobile app, and you do not need one. You buy on the website in a browser, the QR code arrives by email, and you install it from your phone's Settings. There is nothing to download.

Do I need to download an app to use an eSIM?

No. An eSIM is an embedded SIM (an eUICC chip) that the phone's operating system manages by itself. When a provider gives you a QR code, you open Settings and scan it, and the phone downloads and installs the profile using the GSMA standard for remote SIM provisioning. No third-party app takes part in that step.

What does "eSIM app" actually mean?

People use "eSIM app" for three different things, which is why the question causes so much confusion.

  • The OS eSIM manager: not something you download but part of Settings (iOS: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data; Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs). This is where an eSIM is actually installed and switched on or off.
  • A provider's own app: an app some eSIM sellers publish for buying plans, topping up and tracking usage. Convenient, but not required for the eSIM to work.
  • A mobile carrier's app: the app your home network offers to manage your main number's plan or activate that carrier's own eSIM with a phone number. This is a different thing from a travel data eSIM.
If someone says you must install an app before you can have an eSIM, ask whose app it is. It is usually the seller's own app, not something the phone itself requires.

Does esimonline.asia have an app?

No, and that is deliberate. You buy on the website in the browser of your phone or computer. The QR code arrives by email right after payment, and the install details are also on your order page. There is no app to download, nothing taking up storage on your phone, and no extra in-app account to create.

Your order page also shows usage if your plan reports it, and our support team helps in Thai, English and Chinese.

Is it better to buy an eSIM in an app or on a website?

Neither is always better; it depends on how often you buy and what you value. This table summarises the usual differences.

AspectBuying in an appBuying on a website
Anything to install?Yes, you download the app, which may need Wi-Fi and an accountNo, a browser is enough
Phone storageThe app uses storage and may run in the backgroundNo storage used
Repeat purchases and top-upsOften convenient if you buy often, with everything in one placeJust as possible, but you open the site each time
Using a computerUsually not possible; it needs a phoneYes: buy on a computer and scan the QR from that screen with your phone
Notifications and usage trackingSome apps offer push alerts and usage viewsCheck your order page and the phone's own counter

What do I actually need to use an eSIM?

Four things, and none of them is an app.

  1. A phone that supports eSIM, such as iPhone XS and newer (with some exceptions for models sold in certain countries) and many recent Android phones. Check your model with our device checker.
  2. An unlocked phone. A handset locked to one carrier may refuse a profile from another provider, so ask your home network before you travel.
  3. The QR code from your provider, which ours sends by email and shows on your order page.
  4. A Wi-Fi or internet connection during setup, because the phone has to download the profile.

Can I manage an eSIM without an app?

Yes. The phone's own Settings cover everything essential: switching the eSIM line on or off, naming it, choosing which line carries mobile data, and turning data roaming on for that line.

  1. 11. iPhoneGo to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), tap the eSIM line to switch it on or off, and set Cellular Data to use that line. Turn on Data Roaming in that line's menu when you are abroad.
  2. 22. AndroidGo to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the eSIM to switch it on or off, set it as the SIM for mobile data, and enable roaming. Menu names vary slightly by brand and Android version.

How do I check eSIM data usage without an app?

There are two places to look: your order page (if your plan reports usage, the remaining figure appears there) and the phone's own counter. The order-page figure comes from the supplier and typically lags 15 to 60 minutes. The phone's counter measures from its last reset, so the two rarely match exactly.

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular, then scroll to the mobile data figures. They are shown per line, and a Reset Statistics option sits at the bottom of the page.
  • Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the eSIM, then open its mobile data usage (on some phones it is under Settings > Connections > Data usage).
If your phone supports it, you can set a data warning or limit on the same screen, and resetting the statistics before your trip makes the counter start from zero.

Which app is best for eSIM?

No single app is best for everyone, because the thing that really installs an eSIM is the phone's built-in eSIM manager, which is free and already there. If you want an app, choose by what you will actually use: how often you buy, whether you want alerts, and always check the seller's plan terms, refund policy and support first.

Which apps are worth having when travelling?

These have nothing to do with installing an eSIM, but they help you make the most of the data you bought. Install and set them up before you leave, while you still have Wi-Fi.

  • Maps: download offline maps of your destination in advance. It saves data and still works when the signal drops.
  • Translation: most translation apps let you download offline language packs.
  • Messaging and internet calls: chat apps such as LINE or WhatsApp use little data and are the natural way to stay in touch on a data-only eSIM.
  • Tickets and bookings: save tickets, boarding passes and reservations so you can open them offline.
Our travel eSIMs are data-only, with no phone number and no calls or SMS. If you need to receive calls or SMS on your usual number, keep your home SIM active alongside it.

FAQ

Is there an eSIM app?+

Yes, in a few forms, but none is required. Some eSIM sellers publish their own apps, and every eSIM phone has a built-in eSIM manager in Settings. esimonline.asia has no mobile app: you buy on the website and install from Settings.

Do I need to download an app to use an eSIM?+

No. The phone installs the eSIM from Settings by scanning a QR code or entering the details manually. You need an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone and Wi-Fi during installation.

Which app is best for eSIM?+

No app is best for everyone, because installation uses the free eSIM manager already in your phone. If you consider a seller's app, compare plan terms, refund policy and support rather than the app itself.

Can I manage an eSIM without an app?+

Yes. Switch the eSIM line on or off, pick the data line and enable roaming in Settings (iOS: Cellular, Android: Network & internet > SIMs), and view your order and usage on the order page on the website.

Can I see my remaining data without an app?+

Yes. If your plan reports usage, the figure shows on your order page, which can lag by 15 to 60 minutes, and you can read the phone's own counter under Cellular (iPhone) or Network & internet (Android).

Without an app, how do I reach support?+

Use the contact options on the help pages and include your order number. Support is available in Thai, English and Chinese.
