Does a UK eSIM work in Europe, and does a Europe eSIM include the UK?

The UK is outside the EU, so a Europe plan does not always include it. Here is how to check the country list, plan Eurostar trips and handle Ireland.

Respuesta rápida

  • Whether a UK plan works in Europe depends on its country list, because the UK is outside the EU and EU Roam like at home rules do not cover it.
  • Before buying a Europe eSIM, open its country list and look for United Kingdom specifically, because some plans include it and others do not.
  • A UK-plus-Europe trip needs separate visas: a UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries, and a Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK.

Does a UK SIM work in Europe? Not automatically. The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020 and is not in Schengen, so some Europe eSIM plans include it and others do not. Always open the plan's country list and look for United Kingdom before you pay.

Why does a Europe plan not always include the UK?

Each eSIM provider defines its own country list, so Europe does not mean the same set of countries everywhere. Some plans cover EU members only, while others add the UK, Switzerland and Norway. EU Roam like at home rules do not cover the UK either.

Should you choose a regional or a per-country plan?

To decide between a regional and a per-country plan, see the guide “Europe eSIM: one regional plan or a stack of single-country plans?”. Brand comparisons are in “Best eSIM for Europe 2026: one plan for many countries”.

How do visas and data work for London to Paris by Eurostar?

Thai travellers need a Schengen visa for France, Belgium or the Netherlands, and the UK visa is used again to re-enter the UK. Eurostar border checks happen at London St Pancras International before boarding: the UK exit check, then French passport control by French officers.

  • Gates close 30 minutes before departure for Standard and Plus tickets (15 minutes for Premier), so arrive at the time on your ticket and earlier at busy times.
  • The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) started on 12 October 2025 and has run in full since 10 April 2026. At St Pancras, EES registration is done before departure, with kiosks in the terminal.
  • Your passport must meet Schengen validity rules: issued within 10 years and valid 3 months after leaving the EU.

Does ETIAS apply to Thai travellers?

No. ETIAS is for visa-exempt travellers, and Thais need a Schengen visa as usual. The EU plans to start ETIAS in the last quarter of 2026, but no exact start date was confirmed as of 21 October 2026, so check the EU's official site.

Can you continue from the UK to Ireland, and what must the eSIM cover?

The Republic of Ireland is a separate country with its own visa rules, and Thai nationals normally need an Irish visa. However, Thailand is on Ireland's Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme: a Thai holding a UK short-stay visit visa who first entered the UK may visit Ireland without an Irish visa for under 90 days and only until their UK permission ends.

  • The scheme is not reciprocal: an Irish visa does not let you enter the UK or Northern Ireland.
  • An older Irish document gave an end date of 31 October 2026, so check the programme is still running before you book.
  • The Common Travel Area has no routine passport checks on the Ireland–Northern Ireland land border, but visitors still need the right permission for each country.
  • Choose an eSIM that lists both Ireland and the United Kingdom, because crossing the border changes the country you are in.
Visa rules, EES, ETIAS and Ireland's waiver programme can change. This information was last checked in October 2026, so confirm it on the official EU, Irish and Eurostar sites before booking.

How should you handle data on a UK-plus-Europe trip?

On a border-crossing day you rely on your phone for the Eurostar ticket, booking confirmations and barcodes, and for OTPs, so have data working before you reach the station and keep the Thai SIM for bank SMS.

  1. 1Check the country listOpen the plan details and confirm that United Kingdom and every European stop are listed.
  2. 2Install before flyingInstall every eSIM on home Wi-Fi and label the lines clearly, such as UK and Europe.
  3. 3Switch lines when you crossChange the data line on reaching Paris or Ireland and keep Thai-SIM data roaming off so it does not draw data twice.
  4. 4Descargue mapas sin conexiónSave maps of London, Paris and other cities for dead spots.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is there one eSIM that works in both the UK and Europe?+

Yes, but pick a plan whose country list names both the United Kingdom and your European stops, because some Europe plans leave the UK out.

Does a UK SIM work in Europe?+

It depends on the plan and its country list, because the UK is outside the EU and EU roaming rules do not cover it. Check the terms of your plan.

Can a UK visa be used to enter Schengen countries?+

No. A UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries, and a Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK, so Thais apply for each separately.

Do I need a new visa to go from the UK to Ireland?+

Thais normally need an Irish visa, but holders of a UK short-stay visit visa who entered the UK first may be exempt under the Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme. Check the latest conditions before booking.
