What Montreal is like on a phone

Montreal runs day to day in French, so a great many signs and menus are in French only and travellers without it reach for a translation app more than anywhere else in Canada. The city also has a long network of underground passages linking metro stations, malls and office buildings — a blessing in February and something to understand about the signal. Above ground, the old quarter and the student districts are continuously usable. And in winter, what runs out before the data always does is the battery.

International flights arrive at Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), where the international hall is separate from the domestic one but connected on foot. Turn the eSIM line on in the immigration queue and make sure data roaming is enabled for it before leaving the building. An express bus runs into town with a connection the whole way, or you can call a car. In winter allow extra time, because snow slows the roads considerably, and save your accommodation address in French on the phone so you can show it to a driver rather than spelling it out.

A walking day in the city tends to run about 1–2GB, including a translation app opened more often than elsewhere because so many menus and signs are French only. Translating short text costs little; the camera mode costs noticeably more, so download the French offline pack before you travel. In winter the thing to plan for is power rather than data, since hard cold can shut a phone down mid-outing. Carry a power bank and keep the handset in an inside pocket.

• Old Montreal and the Old Port — Cobbles and old stone; street level is fine, but the vaulted cellars many restaurants use go quiet enough that you come up to call a car.

• Quebec City — The highway along the river is connected nearly throughout and the walled old town works well, though narrow lanes and stone ramparts push the GPS fix around when you walk by map.
• Mont-Tremblant and the Laurentians — The road north through forest and lakes includes genuinely unserved stretches, and the ski and hiking routes behind the mountain are quiet too; download offline maps and check winter road conditions with the highway authority first.
• South across the border into Vermont — The road south is connected to the crossing, but whether it works inside the United States depends on the country list on the plan page — check it beforehand. Rural Vermont also has thin stretches of its own, so keep an offline map to hand.
