What Fukuoka is like on a phone

Fukuoka is the door into Kyushu — onsen towns, volcanoes, small castle towns an hour or two away — and it is also a weekend city for people who like that the airport is absurdly close to downtown. It is a comfortable size: walkable, with one subway line reaching most of what a visitor wants. Coverage in town is unremarkable in the good sense, steady and undramatic. The interesting behaviour starts when you leave for the hills or the coast.

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is two subway stops from Hakata and a few minutes more to Tenjin. Switch the eSIM on in the cabin — leave it until later and you may reach the hotel before the line has even finished registering. The subway ride in stays connected the whole way. The other common entry points are Hakata Station for anyone off the Shinkansen from Honshu, and the international ferry terminal for arrivals by sea.

Hakata and Tenjin are threaded with underground shopping passages, and the line reaches down into them without fuss. Nakasu, the river island where the food stalls set up along the water, is equally untroubled. The Momochi seafront to the west is wide open and easy. South of the centre, where the ground rises, and on the local lines that run inland into the Kyushu valleys, weaker stretches begin to appear; along the cliffier parts of the coast the line strengthens and fades with the shape of each bay.

What a day here costs in data

A city day sits around 700MB–1.2GB, less than the bigger metros, simply because the routes are straightforward and you open the map fewer times. What actually eats data here is photographing food and sending it straight away — the stalls and the ramen counters are why most people came. Days out to the surrounding towns cost more, because rural timetables are sparse and you check them repeatedly. If you rent a car for a Kyushu loop, budget for several unbroken hours of navigation a day.

Districts travellers ask about

• Hakata — The station quarter gathers trains, long-distance buses and basement malls in one block and stays connected on every level — a practical place to settle tickets and bookings before moving on.
• Tenjin — The shopping district, with a long underground passage running parallel to the main avenue; the map drifts down there even though the line does not, so steer by exit number rather than by the compass arrow.
• Nakasu — Riverside food stalls that open after dark; the open air keeps the line strong, but weekend queues are long and the counters work fast, so have your payment method ready before you sit down.
• Momochi Seaside — A city beach with the tower and the stadium nearby; on event days the crowd concentrates enough to slow things, but on an ordinary afternoon it is smooth and made for sunset photos.

Day trips out of the city

• Dazaifu — A short private-line ride with the connection intact all the way, and the shrine grounds behave normally; only in exam season and on long weekends does the crowd get thick enough to slow an upload.
• Yufuin — The railway cuts inland through a run of tunnels, and the line comes and goes along the way; the onsen town itself is connected, but save the return ticket to the device before you board rather than after.
• Itoshima — A coast people drive out to for photographs and café stops; the shoreline road is well served, but turn inland behind the headlands and it weakens, so pin the cafés you are aiming for while you are still in the city.
