What Nagoya is like on a phone

Nagoya does not market itself the way Kyoto does, so its visitors are a mix: people meeting suppliers, people breaking a journey before the mountain line north, and people who came specifically to eat the things this city is known for. The avenues are wide and the blocks are long, which makes real walking distances further than the map suggests. The subway is thorough and the line holds across nearly every station. Connectivity here is a thing you stop thinking about until you leave the plain.

The change comes on the northbound trains into the Gifu hills, where the track starts following a river through a chain of tunnels and the connection breaks valley by valley.

Business visitors often land around 1–2GB a day, between calls, file transfers and screen sharing from the hotel. Leisure visitors use less, roughly 700MB–1GB, because getting around takes little thought. Tether a laptop for a working afternoon and the number jumps more than expected, since background file sync spends data quietly; pause automatic sync on the big folders and let it run on Wi-Fi in the evening instead.

• Meieki — Towers around the station over several interlinked basement floors; usable on every level, though the map muddles them, so note the exit name — and your locker number — if you leave luggage.
• Sakae — The shopping and nightlife core, with parks and plazas that keep it more comfortable than tightly built blocks; easy to meet people here because the landmarks are unmistakable.
• Osu — A twisting arcade of secondhand and specialist shops; the roof lets the signal through, but the deepest units answer slowly, so look up what you are hunting for before you turn into the narrow aisles.
• Kanayama — The interchange people use for the airport and the surrounding towns; smoother and less crowded than the main station, and a sensible spot to do an online check-in the night before flying.

Day trips out of the city

• Inuyama — A castle town on the river, a short private-line ride away; the journey and the old streets are fine, though inside the timber keep the line drops off noticeably as the stairs steepen.
• Takayama — The northbound line follows a river through a dozen tunnels and the connection blinks the whole way; the old town at the far end is normal. Download the town map and the return ticket before you leave the plain.
• Shirakawa-go — A long-distance bus through mountain tunnels with almost nothing in the middle section; the village works, the hillside viewpoint wavers. On heavy snow days the timetable can change, so check the operator's own notice before you set out.
