• The CBD and the laneways — Narrow lanes between tall buildings bounce the signal around; it still works, but the blue dot on the map can sit a block away from where you actually are. If a place refuses to appear, step back out onto the main street for a moment and look again.
• Southbank and Docklands — The river frontage is open sky and runs smoother than the lanes, which makes it a good spot to push a long clip up while you sit by the water. The lower levels of the malls and the underground car parks are a different story.
• Fitzroy and Collingwood — Small shops and bars, a good number of them down a flight of stairs where menus stop loading and a ride will not book. Order the car while you are still standing on the footpath outside.
• St Kilda and the bay — Reached by a tram that holds service the whole way. Out at the end of the timber pier it thins a little without going away, and photos still send. It is windier out there than it looks, so keep a firm grip on the phone.

Day trips out of the city

• The Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles — The towns along the way such as Lorne and Apollo Bay stay usable, while the cliff-edge run and the turns inland through the Otway forest include genuinely silent spots. Plan the day as an offline one and treat any bars you do get as a bonus.
