What Oslo is like on a phone

Oslo keeps its wilderness closer than people expect: a few dozen minutes on the metro puts you at the edge of the Nordmarka forest, and a few minutes on foot from the city hall puts you at the pier for the fjord islands. The mix is people heading on to the western fjords, museum and new-waterfront-architecture visitors, and conference travellers. In town the line covers everything. What defines Oslo is how quickly the edge of the city turns into forest and water, so it pays to know in advance when you are about to leave it.

Gardermoen (OSL) lies north of the city, with the fast airport train at about twenty minutes and regional trains a little slower but calling at more stations; both arrive at Oslo Central. Others come by train from Stockholm and Gothenburg, or on long-distance coaches into the terminal next to the station. Switch the eSIM on while you are still in your seat so you can buy rail and city tickets straight away. The run in stays connected apart from the tunnels near the centre.

The centre and the rebuilt waterfront work well on the street and indoors. The metro runs in tunnel through the middle of town with quiet stretches, then climbs into daylight in the suburbs and comes back. Go up towards Holmenkollen and into the Nordmarka forest and the line thins along the walking and ski trails. The boats to the fjord islands stay close enough to shore to remain usable. And a sub-zero winter always drains the battery faster than the plan assumed.

What a day here costs in data

A normal day here is about 800MB to 1.6GB, because everything — transport tickets, museum entry, restaurant bookings — runs through the phone, and many people reopen the outdoor-activity apps several times a day. Forest or boat days use less data but more battery, between the cold and the hunting for service. Film from the ski jump and upload each evening and around 2.5GB a day is realistic.

Districts travellers ask about

• Sentrum and Karl Johans gate — The main axis from the station to the palace; everything is walkable and the line is steady, making it the simplest place to start a first day.
• Grünerløkka — Cafés and second-hand shops along the Aker river; the streets are not wide but the buildings are low, so working from a café is comfortable nearly everywhere in it.
• Aker Brygge and Bjørvika — The waterfront of the opera house and the new towers: open and easy to use, though on the sloping opera roof the wind is strong enough that you should keep a firm grip.
• Holmenkollen — Reached on the metro line that climbs the hill; the view over the fjord is wide and so is the signal, but walk a few hundred metres on into the forest and it begins to thin.

Day trips out of the city

• The Oslofjord islands — Boats leave from the city pier and reach the first island in minutes, with the line still usable because you never go far from shore. Summer and winter timetables differ sharply and are revised from year to year, so check with the operator before planning around one.
• The Nordmarka forest — Ride the metro to the end of the line and walk or ski straight into the trees. The trails have stretches with nothing, so always download offline route maps before leaving town, and understand that an emergency call does not behave like a data session — take your guidance from official services.
• Fredrikstad and its old fortified town — An hour south by train through alternating suburbs and farmland with short dips; the moated old town at the far end is open and works well.
