What Da Nang is like on a phone

Da Nang is used as a base more than as a single destination: people fly in and fan out to Hoi An and Hue. The city is laid out on wide boulevards along the Han river, with several bridges and a long beach to the east. That openness keeps urban coverage steady and predictable. The interesting part is the edges — the mountainous Son Tra peninsula, the caves inside the marble hills, and a cable car climbing a ridge — each of which behaves in its own way.

Da Nang airport (DAD) sits genuinely in the middle of the city, minutes from the river. Switch the line on before leaving your seat, since you may need to arrange a car or confirm your room as soon as you walk out. The other popular approach is the coastal train from Hue over the Hai Van pass, which is simultaneously the best view and the least reliable stretch of signal on the journey, and there are buses from Hoi An in under an hour. If you are coming by rail, settle your accommodation and pick-up before the train enters the pass.

In the city itself, with its grid of streets and buildings that do not crowd each other, the line is consistent along the river and the whole length of My Khe beach. Things change on the drive up the Son Tra peninsula, where the road winds around the mountain and several stretches put the hill between you and the city, pulling service down or away. Inside the caves of the marble hills, walking in beneath solid rock, there is nothing — as you would expect. On the cable car climbing the western ridge, the mid-valley span is unreliable and the line returns at the upper station.

What a day here costs in data

A day here comes to about 700MB to 1.5GB, because the city is less demanding than a capital and the map does not need to stay open. Rent a scooter and run over to Hoi An or up Son Tra on the same day, though, and the figure climbs with the hours of navigation. The long beach means a lot of photography and a lot of simultaneous evening uploads. If you also work from your room and tether a laptop, think in whole gigabytes instead.

• Ba Na Hills — A long cable car from the foot of the mountain to the ridge with the hand-held bridge; suspended mid-valley the line is unreliable, and it returns to normal at the top where the buildings and the crowds are.
• Hai Van pass and Lang Co — North along clifftop road above the sea; the top of the pass is open and usually workable, while the flanks facing into the mountain cut out in patches. If you are riding yourself, set the route before you begin the climb.
• Bach Ma national park — Montane forest to the north up a steep access road; the gate and car parks still have service, but the trails dropping to the waterfalls in the ravines do not, so tell whoever is waiting when you expect to be back before you set off.
