How much data scrolling Instagram and TikTok really uses
Short clips feel free until you realise an hour of autoplay is an hour of video. This separates scrolling, Stories and posting your own work.

- Stories are far lighter at roughly 300–500 MB an hour, and a feed that is mostly still photos runs roughly 250–400 MB an hour.

Does Data Saver make everything look bad?+
On a phone screen the difference is smaller than people expect, because a vertical clip on a six-inch display does not need anything like TV-grade resolution. You may notice a little softness in busy scenes, but on a trip the drop in data is worth far more than the sharpness you give up.
Why does the same amount of scrolling cost more on some days?+
Because the app picks a resolution from the speed it finds at that moment. On a day when you are somewhere with a strong signal, it quietly serves you a sharper stream, which means faster network equals more data spent — unless Data Saver has pinned it down.
Do these apps still use data when I close them?+
A little, from background refresh and notifications, but that is tens of megabytes a day rather than gigabytes. To cut it entirely, switch off Background App Refresh for the app on iOS or Background data on Android. The only cost is that the feed takes a moment longer to fill when you open it.
How much of a 7-day plan should I set aside for social apps?+
With Data Saver on and about half an hour of scrolling a day, roughly 2–3 GB is enough. With nothing switched on and an hour or more a day, budget roughly 7–10 GB.
