I pinned it to 360p and it still feels expensive — why?+
The usual cause is setting it inside a video instead of in Settings > Video quality preferences — the in-video choice applies to that video only. The other cause is time spent in Shorts, which often does not follow the same setting.
Does listening to music on YouTube cost the same as watching?+
No. Pinned to 144p with the screen off, almost no picture is sent and you are down to roughly 50–100 MB an hour, close to an ordinary music app. Leave the screen on at a high quality and you are still paying for a picture nobody is looking at.
Is downloading for offline really cheaper?+
Only if you download on Wi-Fi, or watch more than once. Download over mobile data and watch once and you have spent about what streaming would have cost. The real benefit of downloading is certainty — it plays in a metro tunnel with no signal at all.
