Lost or stolen passport abroad: what a Thai traveller does next
The order of play: police report, Thai embassy or consulate, the documents they usually ask for, then airline, insurer and staying reachable.

Kurz erklärt
- Stay calm, search once more to be sure it is gone, then report it to the local police and ask for a written report. After that, contact the Thai embassy or consulate that covers the area.
- Embassies usually issue a replacement passport or an emergency travel document, but the paperwork, timing and fees vary. Check the embassy's own website or the Thai consular department.
- Tell the airline, your hotel and your insurer early, and keep copies of your documents in email or cloud storage before you travel. It speeds up every step.
First: stay calm and confirm it is really gone
Losing a passport is stressful, but embassies and police in popular destinations have handled it many times. Before you declare it lost, spend ten to fifteen minutes retracing your steps in a methodical way: every bag, the hidden pocket of your backpack, the room safe, yesterday's jacket, and ask at the hotel desk, the restaurant or the vehicle you just used.
If you can, work out whether it was misplaced or stolen, because the wording matters for the police report and for an insurance claim. If you suspect theft, do not confront anyone and do not go back to the scene alone. If you feel unsafe, call the local emergency number first (see our emergency calls guide).

Report it to the local police
In many countries the police report is the first document an embassy, airline or insurer will want to see, so file it quickly and always leave with a copy or at least the report number. Some places have tourist police or a dedicated tourist service point. The hotel or airport desk can tell you where to go.
- Take your Thai ID card or a copy of the passport photo page if you have one; it speeds up identity checks.
- Describe what happened truthfully, with the approximate date, time and place, without guessing beyond the facts.
- If you do not speak the local language, ask for an interpreter or use a translation app, and check that your name and passport number in the report are correct.
- Ask for a copy or reference number and photograph it straight away.
Contact the Thai embassy or consulate
Thai embassies and consulates look after Thai nationals abroad. When a passport is lost, they usually verify your identity and issue a document that lets you continue or return home. Depending on the case that may be a new passport or an emergency travel document.
The required documents, appointment steps, processing time, fees and payment methods differ by embassy and change over time, so we do not quote numbers here. Open the official website of the embassy or of the consular department of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs for current information and the correct contact channels.
Documents embassies commonly ask for
- The local police report or its reference number
- A copy of the old passport if you have one, and a copy of the Thai ID card
- Photos to the embassy's size rules; some embassies can take them on site
- Travel proof such as the flight ticket or accommodation booking
- The completed application form, as the embassy specifies

Your first-day sequence
- 1Police reportGet it in writing and photograph it.
- 2Embassy contactUse the official website, email or book an appointment through the stated channel, and attach any copies you have.
- 3Airline and hotelSay the passport is lost and ask about the rules for changing dates or flights.
- 4InsurerOpen a claim through the channel in your policy and ask which documents to keep.
- 5Cards and phoneIf a whole bag was stolen, freeze your cards and check your phone too.
Airline, onward travel and exit rules
Your ticket was issued with your name and the old passport number. When you get new documents the details may not match, so tell the airline early and ask whether the booking must be updated. Some countries may also ask for proof of how you entered or require a step with the immigration authority before you leave. This differs by country.
If you have connecting flights or hotels booked across several cities, rank which ones would hurt most to miss and talk to the airline and the hotels in that order. Keep every receipt caused by the incident, because you may need it for an insurance claim.

Keep copies before you travel
What helps most is preparation. Scan or photograph the data page of your passport, ID card, driving licence, tickets and insurance policy, and store them where you can reach them even if the phone is gone: your own email opened from another device, or a cloud service protected with two-step sign-in. Leave a copy with one trusted person in Thailand as well.
| What to carry or store | So halten Sie es bereit | Warum |
|---|---|---|
| Passport copy | Cloud file plus a paper copy kept apart from the passport | Speeds up identity checks |
| ID card copy | File in email or cloud | Supports the application |
| Spare photos | A small set in your bag | Some steps need them at once |
| Policy and claims contact | Both on the phone and on paper | Lets you open a claim straight away |
Staying reachable and the phone question
Almost every step needs a connection: an email to the embassy, the airline app, a bank OTP, a map to the police station. If the phone is with you but offline, check whether Thai roaming is on, or use a data eSIM for that country so you are online at once without hunting for Wi-Fi that needs a sign-in or has limits. Keep your main Thai SIM for SMS and OTP as usual.
If the phone vanished along with the passport, follow our guides on a lost or stolen phone abroad and on a lost or skimmed card to lock the device, suspend the SIM and protect your bank accounts.

Insurance and costs
Some travel insurance policies may cover part of the cost of lost travel documents, such as getting new papers or extra accommodation, but the conditions, limits and exclusions vary widely. Read your own policy and ask the insurer directly rather than assuming.
- Keep every receipt, including photos, translations, travel to the embassy and extra accommodation.
- Get the police report, since insurers usually ask for it.
- Notify the insurer within the time frame in your policy.
Without insurance you bear everything yourself, such as extra nights while waiting for documents and ticket change fees, so it is wise to keep a reserve for long or multi-country trips.
Multi-country trips and group travel
On a multi-country trip the question is not only getting a new document but whether an emergency document will be accepted by the next country on your route. A visa in the lost passport may not carry over and may have to be applied for again. Ask the Thai embassy and the next destination's embassy whether an emergency document can be used for entry there. If necessary, shorten the trip and return to Thailand first.
In a group or family, choose one person as coordinator, keep copies of everyone's documents and agree who has to go to the embassy together, so you do not make several trips.
