Where to go in May
Europe's best weather before high season, and the month Asia's rains begin to arrive in order.
May is the month people who know Europe well tend to pick: warm enough for everything without being hot, very long days, and rates that have not yet reached July levels. In Asia the rains begin arriving region by region — which does not rule the continent out, but does mean choosing the right coast and keeping an indoor fallback.
8 places this month suits
France
Long days and warmth enough for both the cities and the countryside, with far shorter queues than summer and the regions outside Paris fully open.
France plansItaly
The most balanced month before summer heat: the coast becomes usable and the historic cities are still walkable all day.
Italy plansGeorgia
Mountain spring: the routes open and the valleys are at their greenest, with prices still low and far fewer visitors than summer.
Georgia plansJapan
Once Golden Week has passed, the weather is good and crowds drop sharply. It sits before the rainy season and is one of the best-value months of the year.
Japan plansIndonesia
The dry season begins on Bali and Java — sunny with a calming sea, and without July's crowds yet.
Indonesia plansIceland
Very long daylight and the highland roads starting to open. It is still cold, but the ring route works and there are fewer people than midsummer.
Iceland plansTurkey
Istanbul and the Aegean coast hit their best weather before summer; the sea is warm enough for some and prices have not yet peaked.
Turkey plansSouth Africa
Early winter, dry and clear across much of the country, and the point where wildlife viewing improves as the vegetation thins.
South Africa plansWhat this month does to a data plan
Multi-country European trips pick up this month. A regional package covering several countries usually costs less than buying them separately and saves re-configuring every time you step off a cross-border train — check the country list before you set out.
What to skip this month
Thailand's Andaman coast and parts of South Asia enter the monsoon. If your plans depend on boats or diving, move the dates or switch to the Gulf coast, which runs opposite.
Thai holidays in May and what they do to fares
May 2027 has two Thai long weekends on the Bank of Thailand list. National Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May with Monday 3 May as the substitute, and Coronation Day is Tuesday 4 May, so most banks and many offices close Saturday 1 to Tuesday 4 May. Visakha Bucha is Thursday 20 May, and one day of leave on Friday 21 May makes another four-day break.
The early-May break overlaps the end of Japan's Golden Week, when 3 to 5 May are national holidays in Japan, so Japan is the one place in Asia to avoid that weekend. Late May, around Visakha Bucha, is one of the best-value times for Japan and Europe before summer pricing.
Visa notes for Thai passport holders in May
These are the entry rules for the places this page recommends. Rules change, so confirm on the official page before you pay for flights.
- Schengen countries (most of the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland): Thai passport holders need a Schengen visa, and since the Entry/Exit System started, fingerprints and a face photo are taken at the first border crossing. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en
- Japan: Thai ordinary passports are visa-exempt for short stays of up to 15 days; a longer trip needs a visa from the Embassy of Japan. Immigration rules: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/index.html
- ASEAN neighbours such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore admit Thai passport holders visa-free for short tourist stays; the permitted length differs by country, so check before a long trip, for example https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/visa_requirements or https://evisa.gov.vn.
- Turkey: check the current rule for Thai passports on the official e-Visa system before booking. https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/
- South Africa: the Department of Home Affairs lists Thai ordinary passports as visa-exempt for up to 30 days. https://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/immigration-services/exempt-countries
- Anywhere else on this page: check the country's embassy in Bangkok or its official e-visa portal, starting from the Thai Department of Consular Affairs. https://consular.mfa.go.th

When to book for May
- For the 1 to 4 May break, book about three months ahead for Asian routes; it is shorter and less contested than Songkran, but the Saturday morning departures still sell first.
- A late-May Europe trip needs a Schengen visa in hand, and appointment slots fill with summer travellers from April; apply as soon as you can within the allowed window.
- Buy and install the eSIM at home in the days before departure; most plans in our catalogue only start counting days on first connection at the destination, which the plan page states.
Data needs in May
A first Europe trip from Thailand often covers three or four countries in two weeks. A Europe regional plan fits that shape, but the lists in our catalogue differ: when checked on 10 October 2026, one Europe package left out France, so check every country on the route before buying. Fourteen days of city travel with maps, rail apps and photos usually fits a fixed plan of 20 GB.
Where to go in May
Is May better than June in Europe?+
Better on price and crowds; June is warmer with slightly longer days. For a city trip with a lot of walking, May usually wins.
Should Asia be avoided this month?+
No — the rains do not arrive everywhere at once. Japan and Korea are still good, and in Southeast Asia you pick the coast that is not yet in monsoon.
How many countries does a Europe plan cover?+
It depends on the package, and each one lists its countries on its own page. Check that every country on your route is on that list before you buy, not after you land.
Which May 2027 dates are Thai holidays?+
Monday 3 May (substitute for Labour Day on Saturday 1 May), Tuesday 4 May (Coronation Day) and Thursday 20 May (Visakha Bucha), on the Bank of Thailand list.
Should I avoid Japan on the early-May long weekend?+
If you can. 3 to 5 May are Japanese national holidays, the tail of Golden Week, so domestic trains and rooms are at their fullest.
Do I need EES registration on my Schengen visa?+
There is nothing to apply for. On your first entry the border officer records your fingerprints and face photo in the Entry/Exit System; allow extra time at the first airport.
Is May a good month for Bali for Thai travellers?+
Yes. The dry season starts and it is before the July peak. As an ASEAN national you can visit visa-free for a short tourist stay; check the length on Indonesia's immigration site.
