Where to go in September
The month frequent travellers pick first: the weather is still good and the crowds have gone.
September benefits from the season's inertia: the sea is still warm from summer, daytime temperatures drop to all-day walking weather, and children are back at school, so prices and crowds fall together. The caution is that it is typhoon season in East Asia and storm season in the Caribbean — build in a spare day.
8 places this month suits
Italy
The sea is still warm from summer while the cities cool to all-day walking weather. Prices drop clearly from August and queues shorten a lot.
Italy plansGreece
The islands are still in full season with far fewer people, and the sea is at its warmest of the year — which surprises most visitors.
Greece plansPortugal
Warm and dry carrying on from summer: the coast is still swimmable, the cities comfortable again, and prices down on the month before.
Portugal plansJapan
Late in the month the air turns dry and noticeably cooler. It is still typhoon season, so keep a spare day in the schedule.
Japan plansHanoi
The north is at its driest with the best visibility and the terraces near harvest, while the centre is still in its storm window.
Vietnam plansTurkey
The coast stays warm and Istanbul returns to good weather: both the city and the sea work at once, without summer's crowds.
Turkey plansMorocco
Summer heat eases and the inland cities become walkable again, with the desert edge comfortable in the mornings and evenings.
Morocco plansNepal
The monsoon ends, skies begin to clear and the autumn trekking season is about to open; visibility improves fast late in the month.
Nepal plansWhat this month does to a data plan
More schedules change from storms this month than in any other, in East Asia and the Caribbean alike. What actually helps is having data from the moment you land, so notices reach you and bookings can be changed at once, rather than hunting for Wi-Fi in a terminal that is already busy.
What to skip this month
Central Vietnam and parts of the Caribbean are in the clearest storm window of their year. If the trip depends on tight connecting flights, avoid them or leave far more margin than usual.
Thai holidays in September and what they do to fares
September 2027 has no Thai public holiday on the Bank of Thailand list, and Thai schools are in session until the October break. That makes it the quietest month for outbound Thai demand, and fares to Europe drop after the European summer ends.
Demand comes from elsewhere instead. Japan's Respect for the Aged Day (third Monday) and Autumnal Equinox Day fall in September under Japan's holiday law and can form a long weekend; Korea's Chuseok and China's Mid-Autumn holiday also fall in September or early October depending on the lunar calendar. Check those dates before booking Japan, Korea or China.
Visa notes for Thai passport holders in September
These are the entry rules for the places this page recommends. Rules change, so confirm on the official page before you pay for flights.
- Schengen countries (most of the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland): Thai passport holders need a Schengen visa, and since the Entry/Exit System started, fingerprints and a face photo are taken at the first border crossing. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en
- Japan: Thai ordinary passports are visa-exempt for short stays of up to 15 days; a longer trip needs a visa from the Embassy of Japan. Immigration rules: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/index.html
- Turkey: check the current rule for Thai passports on the official e-Visa system before booking. https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/
- Anywhere else on this page: check the country's embassy in Bangkok or its official e-visa portal, starting from the Thai Department of Consular Affairs. https://consular.mfa.go.th

When to book for September
- September is a good month to buy Europe at shorter notice, but the Schengen visa still sets the lead time: allow for the appointment and processing before buying non-refundable flights.
- For Japan, Korea and China, avoid the local holiday weeks unless the festival is the reason for going; outside them, September rooms are often cheaper than October's.
- Hong Kong and Taiwan trips in September need a flexible return: the Hong Kong Observatory's typhoon signals can close the airport and businesses for a day.
- Buy and install the eSIM at home in the days before departure; most plans in our catalogue only start counting days on first connection at the destination, which the plan page states.
Data needs in September
A long Mediterranean trip, the classic September shape, often runs Italy into Greece or Portugal into Spain. Check that a regional plan covers both countries; if the trip is mostly one country, its own plan plus a small second one can be cheaper. Ferry days between islands use little data but coverage at sea is patchy, so download tickets before boarding.
Where to go in September
Why is September recommended so often?+
Because you get summer's weather without summer's prices or crowds: the sea is still warm, the cities have cooled, and school is back so families are not travelling at once.
Is the sea still warm enough to swim?+
In the Mediterranean it is at its warmest of the year, because water heats more slowly than air. In northern Europe it is too cold for most people.
How many spare days should I keep?+
One for a week-long trip in a storm-prone region, and do not book a connecting flight on the same day as a long-haul one if you are travelling in East Asia now.
Are there Thai long weekends in September 2027?+
None on the Bank of Thailand list, which makes September good for planned leave and cheaper fares.
When are Japan's September holidays?+
Respect for the Aged Day is the third Monday of September, and Autumnal Equinox Day falls around 22 or 23 September. Japan's Cabinet Office lists the exact dates.
What does a typhoon signal mean for a Hong Kong trip?+
At the higher signals, set by the Hong Kong Observatory, many businesses and transport services pause. Follow the Observatory and your airline before heading to the airport.
Is September too hot for Greece?+
Early September can still be hot at midday; later in the month is milder, and the sea stays warm. Plan sites for the morning.
