Where to go in July
The busiest travel month of the year, and the one where choosing the right destination makes the biggest difference.
July is when school holidays line up across many countries, pushing prices and crowds to their peak in the popular places. Southern Europe is genuinely hot at midday, while northern Europe and East Asia are the more comfortable choices. In Southeast Asia, Thailand's Gulf coast and the eastern Indonesian islands are in a good window, against the usual assumption about the rainy season.
8 places this month suits
Finland
Very long days and the lakes at their best, with warmth enough for the outdoors without any heat.
Finland plansSapporo
Hokkaido is at its best: much cooler than the southern cities and without Tokyo's humidity in the same month.
Japan plansKoh Samui
The Gulf coast is sunny with a calm sea while the Andaman side is in monsoon — the option people most often overlook this month.
Thailand plansMongolia
The short summer is the only window when travel across the steppe is easy: warm by day, cold at night, and every route outside the city open.
Mongolia plansPeru
Mid dry season in the highlands, with the best visibility and trails in good condition. It is the busiest month, so book ahead.
Peru plansTanzania
The dry season, when wildlife viewing is at its best: cooler at altitude than most expect, with almost no rain.
Tanzania plansIceland
The warmest month, with the highland roads fully open — every route usable at once, which happens in no other month.
Iceland plansNew Zealand
Southern winter: ski areas open, the cities still easy to walk, and prices clearly below their own summer.
New Zealand plansWhat this month does to a data plan
Airports and major stations are at their fullest all year, and free terminal Wi-Fi often slows past the point of being able to check a booking on it. Having the plan activated before you leave home is what helps most this month.
What to skip this month
The popular southern European cities are both hottest at midday and fullest of the year. If the point is walking a city, move to September or take northern Europe instead.
Thai holidays in July and what they do to fares
July 2027 has two Thai holiday breaks on the Bank of Thailand list. Asarnha Bucha falls on Sunday 18 July with Monday 19 July as the substitute, giving Saturday 17 to Monday 19 July. H.M. the King's Birthday is Wednesday 28 July, a midweek day that only becomes a long break if you take leave either side.
Thai demand is moderate in July because schools are in session, but the destinations are at global peak: Europe's summer holidays, Japan's school break from late July and the northern hemisphere's dry season. Fares from Bangkok to Europe and to Hokkaido are high for reasons that have nothing to do with Thai holidays.
Visa notes for Thai passport holders in July
These are the entry rules for the places this page recommends. Rules change, so confirm on the official page before you pay for flights.
- Schengen countries (most of the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland): Thai passport holders need a Schengen visa, and since the Entry/Exit System started, fingerprints and a face photo are taken at the first border crossing. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en
- Japan: Thai ordinary passports are visa-exempt for short stays of up to 15 days; a longer trip needs a visa from the Embassy of Japan. Immigration rules: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/index.html
- Peru and Argentina: check the current visitor rule for Thai passports with each country's migration authority before booking: https://www.gob.pe/migraciones and https://www.argentina.gob.ar/interior/migraciones
- Kenya: visitors apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation before flying; use only the government portal. https://www.etakenya.go.ke/
- New Zealand: Thailand is not a visa-waiver country, so Thai passport holders need a Visitor Visa. https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/visas/visa/visitor-visa
- Anywhere else on this page: check the country's embassy in Bangkok or its official e-visa portal, starting from the Thai Department of Consular Affairs. https://consular.mfa.go.th

When to book for July
- For Europe, Iceland, Peru and the safari parks, July is booked by people from every continent; three to six months ahead is normal for rooms, and Machu Picchu entry and Inca Trail permits go earliest.
- Koh Samui and the Gulf islands are the July option that needs no long lead time; the Asarnha Bucha weekend is the only stretch where domestic flights fill.
- If a visa is needed, the visa appointment sets the timeline, not the fare: book the appointment first and buy refundable or changeable flights only after it is confirmed.
- Buy and install the eSIM at home in the days before departure; most plans in our catalogue only start counting days on first connection at the destination, which the plan page states.
Data needs in July
July travel splits between remote and crowded. Mongolia, the Peruvian highlands and Tanzanian parks have long stretches with weak or no signal, so plan offline maps and expect to sync only in towns. Europe's cities are the opposite: strong networks but busy terminals, where activating before you land saves the most time. A two-week summer trip in Europe usually suits 20 GB; a safari week needs far less.
Where to go in July
Can the crowds be avoided this month?+
Yes, by choosing countries outside the European summer shortlist. Eastern and northern Europe and East Asia still have room and cost far less.
Is Asia off the table in its rainy season?+
No — the rain does not fall region-wide at once. Thailand's Gulf coast and much of Indonesia are sunny this month; which coast you pick matters more than which month.
How far ahead should I book?+
For this month's popular destinations, several months ahead is normal — especially rooms near stations and domestic flights on weekends.
Which July 2027 days are Thai holidays?+
Monday 19 July (substitute for Asarnha Bucha on Sunday 18 July) and Wednesday 28 July (H.M. the King's Birthday), on the Bank of Thailand list.
Is a Schengen visa slower to get in summer?+
Appointment slots are harder to find from spring onwards. The EU allows applications up to six months before the trip; apply as early as your dates allow.
Is the Gulf coast really dry in July?+
Koh Samui and its neighbours usually get less rain in July than the Andaman coast, which is in its monsoon. Showers still happen; check the Thai Meteorological Department before boat days.
Will my eSIM work on safari in Tanzania?+
Near towns and lodges, usually yes; deep inside the parks, often not. Treat signal as a bonus there and download maps and documents before leaving the city.
