What Madinah is like on a phone

Madinah moves at a gentler pace and the ground around the Masjid an-Nabawi is more open, which makes walking and meeting up easier than in other cities with comparable numbers of visitors. Most people stay within walking distance of the mosque and live by the prayer schedule. Coverage across the centre is good, but it changes once you head out to the historic sites on the edges and onto the roads toward the desert, where the gaps between masts lengthen.

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International (MED) is about thirty minutes from the centre; many others come by high-speed train from Jeddah or Makkah, arriving at a station outside the centre that needs a connecting car. Turn the line on before you leave the aircraft or the carriage, because you will need to confirm your accommodation and pickup point with a driver straight away. Requirements around travel and which areas may be entered differ case by case and can change, so always check with an official source first.

The broad plazas around the Masjid an-Nabawi and the surrounding streets are well covered, and because the space is open it often feels smoother than in cities boxed in by towers. Just after the major prayers, when hundreds of thousands leave at once, speeds dip temporarily even on full bars. The historic sites on the outskirts and the approach to Mount Uhud still work, though spots tucked behind a rise weaken. The desert roads thin progressively once you pass the city limits.

A day here is mostly around 1–1.5GB, since the day is spent walking and keeping to a schedule rather than navigating across a large city. • The central hotel district — Hotels ranged around the centre within walking distance; steady enough for a video call from the room, though check which side the entrance you actually use is on, since the larger buildings have several.
• The markets and shopping streets — Shops and markets ring the centre and are busiest after the evening prayer; agree a time to regroup, because the shopfronts look alike and it is easy to lose your bearings.
• Mount Uhud & the outskirts — Historic ground outside the centre, reached by car; the line weakens where a rise blocks it, so fix a clear pickup time with your driver before getting out.

Day trips out of the city

• Makkah — Onward by high-speed train or by road, with quite different journey times; check the conditions of travel with an official source before planning, and keep the ticket and your accommodation address offline.
• AlUla — Several hours north-west across desert where the line is gone for long stretches; carry water, fill the tank, and keep the route offline — or take a domestic flight instead if time is short.
• The desert wadis outside the city — Forty minutes to an hour out into open desert; the line thins markedly past the city limits and there are no shops along the way, so go in daylight and tell your hotel when you expect to be back.
