What Makkah is like on a phone

Makkah receives pilgrims from every part of the world, and the rhythm of the city follows the prayer times and the rites. Most visitors stay in the districts around the Masjid al-Haram and move mainly on foot. Connectivity matters here for two practical reasons: finding your group again if you are separated, and letting family know you are well. Coverage across the city is comprehensive, but when enormous numbers of people occupy the same space, speeds drop noticeably.

Most people arrive by road from Jeddah, an hour to an hour and a half, or by high-speed train to a station within the city. Switch the line on before you leave the airport or board, because once you reach the accommodation district you will need to coordinate with your group and your hotel immediately, in crowded conditions. Entry conditions, permits and the documents required differ case by case and can change with the season, so always check with an official source and with your travel organiser.

The districts around the Masjid al-Haram and the main approaches carry dense infrastructure, because they serve very large numbers all year. Courtyards and walkways generally work; inside thick-walled inner halls and basement levels the signal weakens with the structure. The clearest effect comes just after the major prayers and in the seasons when pilgrims arrive together in vast numbers: with hundreds of thousands of users in the same radius, photos and calls slow even at full bars. The roads toward Mina and Arafat behave the same way during the rites.

What a day here costs in data

In pure volume the usage here is modest — roughly 1–2GB a day for messages, photos, prayer times and walking directions. What people underestimate is video calling home at moments that matter to the family; doing that daily takes you toward 3GB. At the busiest times a short message gets through far more easily than a call or a video, so agree with your family beforehand that text will be the main channel on the important days.

• Around the Masjid al-Haram — Where pilgrims spend most of their time; the courtyards and walkways are broad but extremely crowded at certain hours, so agree a clearly identifiable meeting point — a named gate — before separating from your group.
• The Ajyad hotel district — Accommodation within walking distance of the mosque, on sloping streets with a constant flow of people; keep your hotel and street name written in both English and Arabic for asking directions.
• Misfalah & Aziziyah — Accommodation further out, served by shuttle buses; note down your group's boarding point, since there are many stops and the names resemble one another.
• The routes toward Mina and Arafat — Used only during the rites, with immense numbers moving at the same time; follow the schedule your travel organiser gives you rather than relying on a map alone.

Day trips out of the city

• Madinah — Onward by high-speed train or by road, with very different journey times; the desert stretches cut out, so keep your ticket and destination address offline before you set off.
• Jeddah — An hour to an hour and a half west to the port city on a highway with near-continuous coverage; a reasonable break from the density, though allow time for checkpoints along the way.
• Taif — An hour and a half east and up, noticeably cooler; the climb winds and the line wavers with the valleys, so download the map before starting and travel in daylight.
