What Paris is like on a phone

Paris takes both first trips to Europe and returning visitors who come back to walk the same streets again. The rhythm of a day here is set by timed museum slots and restaurants that expect a booking, so the phone comes out far more often than you would guess. On the street and in the parks the signal is consistently good. What people notice most is how abruptly the line quietens when a metro train drops into the older, deeper tunnels.

Most visitors land at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY), while some low-cost flights use Beauvais, much further out and reached by a long coach ride. Arriving by train from London, Brussels or Germany puts you at Gare du Nord or Gare de l'Est. Switch the line on before you reach passport control, because immediately afterwards you have to buy a ticket into town and pick a platform. The RER ride from CDG holds a good signal on the surface stretches, then drops in and out once the line burrows under the centre.

Où la couverture change

The boulevards, the parks and the quays along the Seine stay usable all day. The clearest change is in the metro, where deeper lines and older stations still have tunnel stretches that go silent until the next platform. In Haussmann stone blocks, a room facing an inner courtyard receives noticeably less than one on the street side. Deep underground spaces such as the catacombs and the cellars open to visitors offer nothing at all, and you should not plan around having a signal there.

What a day here costs in data

A walking day in Paris runs about 1GB to 1.6GB, because on top of maps you are opening booking pages, pointing a camera at menus to translate them and re-checking train times. Camera translation costs appreciably more than typing a question in. If you take a lot of photos and leave automatic cloud backup switched on, that is what inflates the number fastest — set backup to run only on the hotel's Wi-Fi.

Districts travellers ask about

• The Louvre and the Tuileries — The courtyard and the garden are excellent; the lower wings set deep behind thick walls are not, so open your timed ticket before you join the queue.
• Montmartre — The top of the hill in front of the basilica is open and connects well; the stepped lanes climbing between tall buildings are where maps stutter and put you on the wrong street.
• Le Marais — Narrow streets but low buildings, so service holds up; the usual snag is a small shop behind an inner courtyard, where you have to step back out to the gate to make a call.
• La Défense — The raised esplanade among the towers connects well, but the passages beneath it and the deep station concourse slow down enough that maps take their time.

Day trips out of the city

• Versailles — The suburban train keeps service nearly all the way; inside the palace the deeper rooms weaken, while the vast gardens behind are open sky and work fine the whole walk.
• Giverny — A train then a bus into Seine-side countryside; on the small roads between villages the signal thins in places, so save the return bus times to the device before you go.
• Reims and the champagne vineyards — The high-speed train is quick and connected throughout, but the cellars cut many levels into the chalk — the highlight of the tour — have no service at all, so agree a meeting point with your companions before going down.
