En bref

  • Check the phone is not carrier-locked and is eSIM-capable, then install over home Wi-Fi before the flight so it is ready on arrival.
  • On arrival, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and set it as the mobile data line, while the Thai SIM stays on for OTP texts with its data off.
  • A local prepaid SIM needs passport registration before use; a foreign eSIM skips local registration but has no Hong Kong number.

Before buying: check the phone

The general trip checklist lives in “Hong Kong Trip Prep: Checklist, SIM, eSIM and Staying Online”. This guide covers only installing and configuring the eSIM properly.

  • The phone must support eSIM; check settings or the maker's site.
  • The phone must not be locked to a Thai carrier; if unsure, ask your carrier before you go.
  • The operating system should be the latest version your phone supports.
  • The phone supports 4G or 5G, because 3G in Hong Kong is being retired.

Installing at home over Wi-Fi

  1. 1Open your order email or pageHave the QR code or install details from the seller ready. Show the QR on a computer screen and scan it with the phone.
  2. 2Add the eSIM planGo to settings, choose Add eSIM, and follow the prompts until the plan appears in your list.
  3. 3Label the linesRename them Thai SIM and HK eSIM so you never mix them up when choosing the line for calls, messages and data.
  4. 4Prepare it, keep data off for nowAt home, leave the eSIM line off or its roaming switched off so it does not start early, then enable it in Hong Kong. Check in the plan details when the validity period begins.
  5. 5Keep the QR codeMany plans allow only one install, so do not delete the email, and do not remove the eSIM from the phone without reason.
When validity starts, whether a QR can be reused and which phones are supported differ by seller. Check the plan page and confirmation email before installing (last checked October 2026).

Setting the Thai SIM and eSIM to work together

Receiving SMS on the Thai SIM abroad may carry conditions from your Thai carrier. Check with your provider, and if you depend on bank OTPs, test before leaving.

Landing at HKIA

  1. 1Switch airplane mode offOnce the plane lands, turn airplane mode off and give the phone a moment to find a network.
  2. 2Enable the eSIM and roamingSwitch on the HK eSIM line, turn on its data roaming and pick it for mobile data.
  3. 3Test straight awayOpen a map or send a WhatsApp message before heading to the Airport Express or a bus.

Do not rush to remove or swap the Thai SIM at the airport. Leave it in with data off, and check that the network name on screen belongs to the HK eSIM line rather than the Thai SIM. If no signal appears within a few minutes, go to the troubleshooting list below. Meanwhile the airport's free Wi-Fi can bridge the gap; check details on the airport website.

Troubleshooting no service

  • No service: toggle airplane mode, then restart the phone.
  • Connected but no data: check roaming is on for the eSIM, not the Thai SIM, and that the eSIM is the data line.
  • APN: confirm the APN matches what the seller lists; many plans set it automatically.
  • Wrong line: make sure mobile data is not pointing at the Thai SIM, and disable automatic data switching if present.
  • Weak signal: try selecting a network manually in settings if the plan allows it.

Using the eSIM through the trip

Once it is running, build a few data habits. Maps, WhatsApp chat and restaurant bookings use little data, while video streaming and bulk photo uploads use a lot, so save those for hotel Wi-Fi.

  • Check the remaining allowance on the seller's page now and then.
  • Turn off automatic app updates over mobile data.
  • If you cross to Shenzhen or Macau, check the plan covers that area before you pass the border.
  • Keep the Thai SIM on for SMS until you are home.
Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LINE work normally in Hong Kong, so you need no VPN for everyday use there.

Questions fréquentes

Questions fréquentes

Should I install at home or at the airport?+

At home over Wi-Fi is safer, because installing needs an internet connection and the airport can mean queues and slow signal.

Dois-je activer l'itinérance des données ?+

Yes, for the eSIM line, since visitor plans run through roaming on local operators. Keep it off for the Thai SIM.

What if there is no service when I land?+

Toggle airplane mode, restart, confirm the right line and roaming, then check the APN and try picking a network manually.

Does the eSIM work in mainland China?+

A Hong Kong-only plan does not cover mainland China. For Shenzhen, choose a plan that lists mainland China.
