What Athens is like on a phone

Most people give Athens two or three nights before taking a boat to the islands; others come for the ancient sites alone and stay longer. The centre is flat and then climbs the several rocky hills that push up through the middle of the city, so there are wide-open quarters and tight old lanes in the same walk. Coverage across the urban area is even and reasonably dense. What makes it feel different from place to place is how many people are standing there, more than how far the masts are.

Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) sits out to the east, linked in by metro line 3 or the X95 bus to Syntagma. Turn the eSIM on in the terminal, because you will be buying a ticket and reading stop names. Anyone heading onward to the islands usually goes straight to Piraeus, where different routes leave from different numbered gates, so it is worth having the map open and the gate number found in advance. For the eastern islands the boat may instead go from Rafina, which is in an entirely different direction.

The centre and the main squares are fine. Up on the Acropolis rock the sky is open and the signal reaches easily, but the speed drops sharply through the morning when everyone climbs at once. The lanes of Plaka below are narrow with two- and three-storey buildings pressed together, so the map pin wanders a little. Metro platforms have service and the tunnels do not. At Piraeus, with thousands waiting for boats at the same hour of the morning, the speed falls further than anywhere else in the city.

What a day here costs in data

An Athens day leans on the map while you walk between ancient sites scattered across different corners of town, plus booking entry, reading labels or listening to an audio guide, and photographing from a hill at sunset. That tends to land around a gigabyte a day. A day spent arranging island boats runs higher, because you check the schedules repeatedly and those schedules shift with the season and the weather — take the operator's own notices as the authority.

Districts travellers ask about

• Plaka — Old lanes below the Acropolis, narrow and crooked enough that the pin drifts and you take the wrong turn; remembering the shop on the corner works better than the map.
• Monastiraki and Psyrri — The market and nightlife quarter, the densest crowd in the city, with the bandwidth visibly shared out early in the evening; call a car from the larger street just outside instead.
• Koukaki — A quieter residential quarter south of the rock, with wider streets and fewer people, and the steadiest place in the centre to work through the day.
• Kolonaki and Exarchia — Two adjoining quarters with quite different characters, both on ground rising towards Lycabettus; the higher you climb the more open it gets and the better it holds.

Day trips out of the city

• Cape Sounion — The coast road south has stretches past cliffs and small bays where it thins, but the headland itself, open to the sea, holds up well at sunset.
• Delphi — Hours of climbing into the Parnassus range, with gaps in the valleys and a return at each village; the site itself, high on the slope, works better than you would expect.
• Aegina or Hydra for the day — Boats leave from Piraeus and the connection eases off once you are away from the shore, coming back as you approach the island; book the return in advance and check the day's last sailing with the official source, since it changes by season.
