What Las Vegas is like on a phone

Las Vegas holds three kinds of visitor at once: people in for a couple of nights, people flying in for a trade show, and people using the city as a base before driving out to the western parks. The resorts on the Strip run nearly everything through their own apps, from the room key to dinner bookings and show entry, so the network here is built to absorb enormous crowds. Drive a short way out of the built-up area, though, and the picture becomes desert with long genuinely silent stretches. The gap between those two worlds is what catches people out.

Everyone lands at Harry Reid International (LAS), a few minutes from the south end of the Strip, with most international flights into Terminal 3 and domestic ones spread across Terminal 1. Switch the eSIM line on aboard the aircraft or as you walk to baggage claim, because app-based pickups happen on a level of the car park and finding the right floor without a connection is a miserable exercise. Signal weakens a little inside the multi-storey garage, so order the car while you are still in the terminal hall and then walk up. The Strip and downtown are saturated, but deep inside a windowless casino floor a long way from the street, strength falls off enough to notice. Big exhibition halls are the other thing to watch, because when a major show is on, tens of thousands of people are online inside one building at the same time. Head out towards Red Rock, Valley of Fire or the road to the Grand Canyon and there are long stretches with no service at all rather than merely slow service. Downloading offline maps before you drive out of town is always the safe move.

What a day here costs in data

A day spent entirely in town is usually light — a little over a gigabyte, mostly resort apps, short map hops and photos — but uploading clips from a show or a rooftop pushes that up fast. Trade-show days run heavier, with email open, a laptop tethered and QR codes being scanned all day. On a day driving out into the desert you will use less data almost by default, because for part of it there is none to use; what does suffer is the battery, since the handset keeps hunting for a network. Carry a power bank on those days rather than a bigger allowance.

• The Strip — The busiest corridor in the city stays strong, yet on a Saturday night when the shows finish together, calling a car and loading the map both slow for a while.
• Downtown and Fremont Street — Under the light canopy on Fremont a lot of people stand packed into a narrow space, so speeds drop more easily than out in the open.
• The Convention Center district and Paradise — Empty and quick when nothing is on, but during a major show both the halls and the surrounding streets fill at once; the dates move every year, so check the organiser's own calendar.
• Summerlin and the Red Rock edge — Comfortable across the residential streets, but past the last house and into the conservation area the line thins out quickly.

Day trips out of the city

• Hoover Dam and Lake Mead — The main road to the dam mostly holds, but the lakeside roads and the viewpoints down in the canyon cut out in places; set the return route before you drive down.
• The Grand Canyon — Both the drive and the rim itself include genuinely unserved stretches, so download offline maps before leaving Vegas. Park fees and booking rules change from year to year — check the official site before you travel.
• Valley of Fire and Zion — The desert road between them goes quiet for long runs, and so do the deep sandstone canyons; fill the tank and save your destinations in advance rather than relying on a live search.
