Why is the network name not the provider I bought from?+
Because a travel plan does not own masts in the destination. It authorises your phone to attach to networks already there, through agreements between operators. The name you see is the local network currently serving you. An unfamiliar name is normal and usually means things are working correctly.
Can I choose the network myself, and should I?+
On most handsets yes, by turning off automatic selection in the mobile network settings; where that sits varies by manufacturer and OS version. Generally you should leave it automatic, because the system handles handovers while you move better than you can. Use manual selection only when stationary and the current network is performing badly — and remember to switch it back.
Full bars but nothing loads — what does that mean?+
It means the phone registered on the network but the data path is not up. The usual causes are mobile data still off, data roaming not enabled where the plan needs it, the wrong line selected for data, or the allowance already used. Check those four, then restart once.
Why is speed so different morning and evening in the same spot?+
A cell's capacity is shared among everyone attached at that moment, so when a whole district is online at once each share is smaller. That is a condition of the local network, not a property of your plan. To test it, try again at a quieter hour and compare.
Near a border my phone attached to the neighbouring country. What now?+
It happens because the signal from the other side can be stronger. The consequence depends on whether your plan covers that country too. If it does not, you may have no service until the correct network is reattached. Move further inland and restart, or use manual selection briefly and set it back to automatic once you are away from the border.
Can a data-only plan receive my bank's SMS codes?+
No — a data-only plan has no number for calls or texts. If codes are sent to your existing number, you need a separate way to receive them: keep that line roaming alongside on a dual-SIM handset, or move to a different verification method before you travel.
