Manual selection fixed it, but data died again in the next city+
That is expected behaviour. Pinning an operator stops the phone moving to another even after you leave that operator's coverage. Set it back to automatic before travelling between cities, and only select manually again if the problem returns in the new place.
How long before I decide manual selection did not work?+
Give it a full two minutes without touching anything. Registering on a foreign network involves several exchanges and is noticeably slower than at home. If two minutes pass with no data indicator, try the next operator on the plan's list.
I can see a neighbouring country's operator and I have not crossed the border+
That is normal close to a border, because radio waves do not stop at a line on a map. If that country is not in your plan, data will not work. Select an operator in the country you are actually standing in, then return to automatic once you are further from the border.
Do I need to configure an APN myself?+
Most travel plans configure it automatically when the profile installs, so there is nothing to touch. If yours does need manual settings, they are stated in the confirmation email or on the plan page. Do not borrow values from elsewhere, since wrong ones prevent any connection at all. When in doubt, ask us with your order number.
Does selecting manually cost extra?+
No. As long as you pick an operator on the plan's list, usage stays entirely within that plan. What to watch is leaving data roaming on for your home SIM at the same time, since that is a different line billed at your home operator's rates.
