What a year in Honduras looks like

Honduras is three places that do not share a calendar. The interior, including Copán and the capital, runs the standard Central American dry season from about November to April. The northern Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands, however, take most of their rain from roughly October to January, which is the opposite of what visitors usually assume. That means the month when Copán is bone dry can be the month when underwater visibility at Roatán is at its worst. The Atlantic hurricane season normally runs June to November and concerns the north coast rather than the highlands. Deciding what the trip is for settles the month far more cleanly than any general rule.

The year, in windows

• February to April — The weeks when the whole country agrees with itself. The interior is dry and Copán is comfortable to walk, while the sea around Roatán and Utila has settled and cleared after the late-year rain. It is high season for divers, and the courses on Utila fill quickly. The coast heats up steadily through to April. Easter week is a major domestic holiday and the mainland beaches fill with Honduran families, which is worth knowing if you wanted a quiet stretch of sand that week.
• May to July — The rain returns inland as afternoon storms, while the Caribbean coast stays comparatively dry and the sea keeps letting boats out. That combination suits anyone whose trip is really about the islands but who does not want to pay high-season rates. The forest in Pico Bonito is deep green and the waterfalls run full. Humidity climbs from June onward. The hurricane count starts in June, though most years these weeks stay quiet.
• August to September — The hottest and most humid stretch on the coast, and the busiest part of the Atlantic hurricane season. The sea still lets boats out on plenty of days and island rates drop a long way, but this is the window where a changeable ticket and a spare day earn their place. Inland it is mid wet season, so the dirt roads to the mountain villages are slick and journeys take longer than the map says. More than any other months, these ask you to stay flexible.
• October to January — This is the wet season of the north coast and the Bay Islands, which runs opposite to what most people guess: the rain here is longer and more frequent than at midyear, and underwater visibility falls after a heavy spell. At the same time the interior is entering its dry season and Copán is at its best. December and January give the most comfortable inland air of the whole year. Domestic travel is heavy around the New Year period, so book the popular mainland spots ahead.

The weeks to aim for

February to April is the only window when the islands and the interior are both at their best at once: clear settled water around Roatán and a dry, walkable Copán. If the trip is essentially a diving trip, March usually gives the best visibility of the year. For good value with a sea that still lets you out, aim at May into early July, because the north coast has not yet started its own wet season while the rest of the region has. Match the month to the half of the country you actually care about.

The weeks to avoid

September stacks the heat, the humidity and the busiest part of the hurricane season on top of each other, so an island trip that month should assume some days when the boats stay in and a connecting flight that may need moving. October to December is when divers are most often disappointed, because rain on the north coast clouds the water in spells even though the rates look excellent. Turn it around, though, and those same three months are the best of the year for Copán and the mountains. In Honduras this is less a matter of avoiding a season than of choosing which half of the country you are travelling for.

What the season does to a data plan

On the Bay Islands the signal is good in the populated stretches such as West End and Coxen Hole and around the ferry dock, thins along the quieter bays, and disappears once the dive boat is offshore. Booking a course, confirming the ferry to La Ceiba and finding out whether tomorrow's boat is cancelled all happen over messages and chat groups, so a data line that actually works is part of the trip rather than a convenience. During the north coast's late-year rains the ferry can stand down on days when the swell is up, and that news tends to arrive only a few hours before departure. The road to Copán and the mountain villages has long stretches with nothing, so download the offline map before you leave town.
