Tencent Maps in China: language, download and how it compares with Amap

Tencent Maps, Chinese name 腾讯地图, is a real Chinese map app, but for a Thai visitor it is a backup at best. It is Chinese only, and a store test on 6 November 2026 did not find it on the Thailand or US App Store or on Google Play for Thailand. Install Amap, using the listing named AMap Global, as your main app instead.

What is Tencent Maps (腾讯地图)?

Tencent Maps, Chinese name 腾讯地图 (Téngxùn dìtú), is a map and navigation app. The China App Store names its provider as Shenzhen Tencent Computer Systems Co., Ltd., and its website is map.qq.com, which is in Chinese only. Because the web address uses qq.com, you will also see the product called QQ Map.

Can you download Tencent Maps from your normal store?

In a store test on 6 November 2026, the app was not found on the App Store in Thailand, the US, Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan, and the Android app (com.tencent.map) was not found on Google Play for Thailand and the US. This is a test on one date, not a Tencent statement, and stores can change.

Tencent's mobile page links an Android APK, and Bellingcat says one is needed on Android outside China. This guide does not advise sideloading an APK, changing your Apple ID region or using third-party download sites. If you want a map that installs from your normal store, choose Amap.

Does Tencent Maps have English or Thai?

The China App Store lists Simplified Chinese only, and Bellingcat says the app, its documentation and its support are only available in Chinese. Expect menus, place names and help pages in Chinese characters, with no English or Thai option to switch on.

What can Tencent Maps do?

The China App Store listing covers driving, bus, taxi, walking and cycling routes, ride-hailing across platforms, 3D and satellite views, and indoor maps for major airports, stations and malls. It does not mention street view, offline maps or WeChat.

• Street view: Tencent's web help page says it is on map.qq.com, but it tells users to install Adobe Flash, so the page is old. Bellingcat says street view is only in the mobile app and tends to be outdated. Wikipedia says it launched in 2011 and relaunched in December 2012. Do not plan around it.
• Offline: Tencent's mobile page advertises a zero-data mode that still navigates without a connection, but that page carries a 2023 copyright and the current listing does not mention it. Do not count on it today.

Does Tencent Maps work with WeChat, and can you sign up?

The only documented link is for developers. WeChat's developer docs tell mini program developers to register a key with Tencent Location Service before using the map component, and say the component uses GCJ-02 coordinates. That covers mini programs only. For sharing a location in a chat, check the menus inside WeChat.

Sign-up and Thai phone numbers

No source says whether the app accepts a Thai number or needs a login for basic use. Expect a Chinese-language sign-in screen, and do not depend on this app for your trip.

Why does mobile data matter for a map app in China?

Live navigation, place search and ride hailing all need a data connection. No app is guaranteed to load on every SIM or network, so test your map on arrival, keep a second app that works in China ready, and save your hotel name and address in Chinese before you travel.
