What Vancouver is like on a phone

Vancouver puts the sea and the mountains within sight of the same downtown, so visitors tend to alternate between city days and days spent hiking, riding a gondola or taking a ferry across to Vancouver Island. Through the built-up area and along the SkyTrain the signal is steady. Once you are into the fjord valleys and on the coast road towards Whistler, though, the picture shifts with every rock wall between you and a mast. The city also has large Chinese- and Punjabi-speaking communities, so multilingual shop signs are entirely normal here.

Every international flight lands at Vancouver International (YVR), where the international and domestic terminals connect on foot. Turn the eSIM line on in the immigration queue, because on the far side you must choose at once between the Canada Line and a car. The SkyTrain station is inside the airport building: the elevated sections behave normally, but once the line drops underground before downtown it cuts out between stations. By car, the route in across the bridges is connected the whole way and comes with a view of the inlet.

Downtown, Yaletown and Kitsilano are continuously usable, and Stanley Park is fine along the seawall, though the trails deep under the tall trees thin out. Elevated SkyTrain is good; the downtown tunnel drops until the next station. Riding a gondola up the North Shore peaks actually improves things once you are high with the city in view, but the trails behind the summit go silent. The Sea-to-Sky road to Whistler has stretches that genuinely drop against the rock walls — always download offline maps before setting off.

What a day here costs in data

A city day runs about 1–2GB, with Wi-Fi in the cafés and short distances between things. A hiking or mountain day uses less almost by default, because for part of it there is no service to use — but allow more battery, since the handset keeps hunting. Days driving to Whistler or riding a ferry climb again with navigation open and frequent photo stops. Video from the mountain viewpoints is the single biggest item; letting it sync back at the hotel makes the number far easier to control.

Districts travellers ask about

• Downtown and the West End — Waterside towers on a dense network, usable throughout; the basement function rooms in some hotels are clearly weaker than the lobby above.
• Gastown and Chinatown — Old brick and cobbles, fine at street level, though basement bars and some converted warehouses are quieter than you would guess.
• Kitsilano and the west-side beaches — Open beaches and low houses keep the line even; on a summer evening when everyone gathers for sunset, uploads slow for a while.
• Richmond and the airport side — An Asian restaurant district with multilingual signage, well covered throughout and on the SkyTrain line, so you can get back into town without calling a car.

Day trips out of the city

• Whistler on the Sea-to-Sky highway — The coast-and-canyon road has places where the signal genuinely goes against the rock; download the whole route offline before leaving town, and in winter check conditions with the highway authority, since snow closures happen.
• Victoria and Vancouver Island — Mid-strait the line weakens in stretches, and Victoria itself is normal, but the roads up-island go quiet for long runs. Ferry timetables change with the season, so check with the operator on the day.
• South across the border to Seattle — The highway south is connected as far as the crossing, but whether it keeps working inside the United States depends on the country list on the plan page — check it first. Border rules and paperwork change from year to year, so ask the immigration authorities directly.
