Canada eSIM and mobile data: which option to choose, how many GB, and where signal drops
A comparison of eSIM, local prepaid SIM and Thai roaming for Canada, plus the Rogers, Bell and Telus networks, the 3G shutdown and signal gaps in national parks.

Respuesta rápida
- For most Thai travellers, a Canada eSIM is the easiest option because you install it in Thailand and have data as soon as you land.
- Your phone needs VoLTE on 4G or 5G, because Bell shuts down its 3G network nationally on March 1, 2027.
- The Icefields Parkway and many remote areas have no cell coverage, so download offline maps before you go.
A Canada eSIM is the simplest choice for most Thai travellers: you install it in Thailand, it connects on arrival to 4G or 5G networks run by Canadian carriers such as Rogers, Bell or Telus, and your Thai SIM stays in the phone for bank OTP texts. A local prepaid SIM suits long stays, and roaming suits short business trips.

Should you use an eSIM, a local SIM or roaming in Canada?
If your trip is under a month and you mainly need internet, a data eSIM is usually the most convenient. If you need a Canadian number or are staying long, a local prepaid SIM fits better. The table below sums up the three options.
| Opción | Cómo funciona | Ideal para | Ten cuidado con |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM de viaje | Download a profile by QR code, install before you fly, and use it alongside your Thai SIM | Trips of 3 days to 4 weeks, mostly maps and chat | Phone must support eSIM and not be carrier-locked; many plans are data-only |
| Local prepaid SIM | Buy from a carrier store or retailer in Canada after landing | Stays of several months, or when you need a Canadian number | You must find a shop after a long flight; a single-tray phone means removing your Thai SIM |
| Thai carrier roaming | Switch on roaming on your existing Thai SIM | Very short trips where you must take calls on your Thai number | Check the current rates with your Thai carrier first, as roaming data terms are often complex |
Ventajas
- Data works from the moment you land at YVR, YYZ or YUL, with no shop to find
- Your Thai SIM stays in the phone for bank SMS OTPs
Desventajas
- Many plans have no Canadian phone number
- Older or carrier-locked phones may not accept an eSIM

Which mobile networks cover Canada: Rogers, Bell or Telus?
Canada has three main national networks: Rogers, Bell and Telus. All three cover big cities such as Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal and the main highways well, but signal thins out sharply in the mountains, national parks and the north.
Travel eSIMs usually connect through one or more of these networks. Before you buy, check which network a plan names and whether it supports 4G LTE or 5G. If your route focuses on the Rockies or long drives, knowing the network lets you compare it with that carrier's own coverage map.

Where is there no phone signal in Canada?
The gap Thai travellers meet most often is the Icefields Parkway. Parks Canada says the Icefields Parkway has “no cell coverage”; it is a remote 232 km road from Lake Louise to Jasper. The north, including Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Churchill, also has limited coverage outside towns.
- Download offline maps of Banff, Jasper and your whole route in Google Maps or Maps.me before leaving the hotel
- Save hotel bookings, your Parks Canada pass and shuttle tickets as screenshots
- Tell a friend or your accommodation your route and expected arrival time
- In no-signal areas, use airplane mode with GPS on to save battery

Does the 3G shutdown in Canada affect your Thai phone?
Recent phones with 4G LTE or 5G and VoLTE work normally, but older handsets that only make calls over 3G will stop working. Bell says its HSPA (3G) network was retired in Manitoba on December 31, 2025 and shuts down nationally on March 1, 2027. Affected devices lose voice, text, data and 9-1-1 calling.
Rogers says on its support page that it is retiring its 2G network on November 30, 2027, and that VoLTE is required for all calls after that. For Telus, check the 3G retirement dates on Telus's own support pages. The takeaway for visitors: bring a VoLTE-capable phone. eSIM data already runs on LTE or 5G.
Do you need a Canadian phone number, or is data-only enough?
For most visitors, data-only is enough: you can call over LINE or WhatsApp and use maps, ride-hailing and transit apps. A Canadian number matters when someone needs to call you back, such as a restaurant, a tour operator or a car rental desk.
- Data-only: fine for city trips, chat, maps and app calls
- With a Canadian number: useful when renting a car, booking tours, or when an app asks for SMS verification on a local number
- Thai SIM: keep it on for bank OTPs, turn off its data roaming, and ask your Thai carrier how roaming SMS is charged
How many GB do you need for Canada?
A one-week trip with maps, chat and moderate social media often uses about 5 to 8 GB. Long-distance drivers, video uploaders and anyone sharing a hotspot use much more. The figures below are editorial estimates, not official data.
| Duración del viaje | Light use (maps, chat) | Heavy use (video, hotspot) |
|---|---|---|
| 5–7 days | 3–5 GB | 10 GB or more |
| 10–14 days | 6–10 GB | 20 GB or more |
| 3–4 weeks | 12–20 GB | 30 GB or more, or an unlimited plan |
If you are driving the Rockies, downloading offline maps on hotel Wi-Fi cuts navigation data a lot, and setting photo backup to Wi-Fi only stops your cloud uploads eating your plan.
How do you set up a Canada eSIM before leaving Thailand?
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi one or two days before you fly, then switch it on when you land in Canada. That way you have data for ride-hailing or maps from the moment you leave the airport.
- 1Comprueba tu móvilConfirm the phone supports eSIM, is not carrier-locked, and supports VoLTE on 4G or 5G
- 2Install over Wi-FiScan the QR code at home and label the lines clearly, such as Canada and Thai
- 3Set up the Thai lineTurn off data roaming on the Thai SIM and keep it for calls and SMS only
- 4Activate on landingAt YVR, YYZ or YUL, make the Canada eSIM your data line and turn on data roaming for that line

Preguntas frecuentes
Is a Canada eSIM good for tourists?+
Yes for most tourists, because you install it before the flight and have data as soon as you reach Canada. Your phone must support eSIM and not be carrier-locked.
Do I need a Canada eSIM with a phone number?+
Most people do not need one because app calls work. If you rent a car, book tours or need people in Canada to call you, a local number is more convenient.
Should I buy Canada data before I fly or after I land?+
With an eSIM, buy and install it before the flight over home Wi-Fi. A local prepaid SIM card has to be bought in a shop after you land.
Is there phone signal on the Icefields Parkway?+
Parks Canada says the Icefields Parkway has no cell coverage, so download offline maps and save key details before you set off.
