What Antalya is like on a phone

Antalya is the base for Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast: the walled old town of Kaleiçi, long beaches on either side of the city, and resorts strung out over tens of kilometres. Visitors split between people staying put at a resort and people using it as a start point for driving to the ancient sites along the shore. Coverage in the city and along the main beaches is good, but it changes in the old lanes, on the beaches below the cliffs, and on the climb west into the mountains.

Antalya airport (AYT) is twenty to thirty minutes from the city and extremely busy in summer, with domestic and international flights in separate terminals — check which one your hotel transfer is meeting you at. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft, because arrivals are packed in season and you may need to reach a driver immediately. If your resort is well east or west of the city, allow an hour or more on top for the drive.

The city's shore road, Konyaaltı beach and Lara to the east all stay connected. What changes is inside Kaleiçi, where stone walls and old Ottoman houses make your position drift and weaken the line in the deeper alleys. Some beaches sit below cliffs and are reached by lift or stairs, where the signal fades close against the rock face. The coast road west through high ground cuts out on bends and in tunnels, and on a boat offshore it thins with distance.

What a day here costs in data

If you mostly stay at a resort, a day can come in under 1GB, since you are on the property's Wi-Fi much of the time. Drive out to the ancient sites and shoot all day and it is nearer 2GB between navigation and uploads. Navigating the coast road costs more than you would expect, because the map reloads repeatedly as the line comes and goes — downloading the whole route in the morning is the cheaper habit.

• Kaleiçi — The walled old town of stone lanes and Ottoman timber houses, where your position drifts easily — use Hadrian's Gate or the old harbour as a meeting point rather than a pin.
• Konyaaltı beach — The long pebble beach west of the city with a promenade and mountains behind; strong all along, and easy to order a car back from the road above.
• Lara — The sandy east side lined with large resorts; it is further from the city than people assume, so check whether your hotel is at the near or far end of the road before arranging a car.
• The old harbour & the cliffs — The harbour below the cliffs, reached by ramp or lift and the departure point for coastal boat trips; the line fades close to the rock face, so buy and save your boat ticket before going down.

Day trips out of the city

• Perge and Aspendos — Thirty minutes to an hour east on flat roads with service nearly all the way; the ruins themselves are broad and shadeless, so download the site plan first and go in the morning to avoid the heat.
• The Düden falls & Karain cave — The falls are close to the city and well covered; the cave is an hour north and uphill, with no service inside — fix a meeting point at the car park before going in.
• The western coast toward Kaş and Olympos — Hours of winding cliff road where the line drops on the bends and in the tunnels; download the whole route, fuel up before the mountain section, and avoid driving it at night.
