What Copenhagen is like on a phone

Copenhagen moves by bicycle more than by car, and that changes how a phone gets used: most people set the route before they push off and listen to the directions rather than looking at a screen. The visitors are design and architecture people, families in for the amusement gardens, and business travellers over for a couple of meetings. The city is flat and compact, so most of it is within a twenty-minute ride. The line works across the centre, and what you actually need to arrange is a handlebar mount and a power bank rather than more coverage.

Kastrup Airport (CPH) offers two ways in from the same building: the M2 metro, about fifteen minutes to the centre, and mainline trains into Copenhagen Central. Plenty of people also arrive on the Øresund train over the bridge from Malmö, which is a different country, or by cruise ship at the northern quays. Switch the eSIM on while you are still in your seat, since metro tickets are bought in an app and the gates come before the platform. The ride in holds up apart from short tunnel sections.

Centre and inner suburbs are covered evenly, helped by flat ground and buildings that do not tower. The driverless metro runs in deep tube with quiet stretches between stations, while the overground S-trains stay usable the whole way. Ride the coastal cycle routes north and the line holds, but the sea wind chills the phone and the battery goes with it. Out on the smaller islands and the far side of Amager there are thinner patches across the open ground.

What a day here costs in data

A normal day comes to about 700MB to 1.4GB, most of it navigation while cycling, which stays open longer than it would on foot, plus the ticket app and restaurant bookings, which here are nearly all done on a phone. Shoot a lot of architecture and upload nightly and around 2GB a day is fair — and bring a power bank, because navigating from the handlebars in cold wind eats more charge than you expect.

Districts travellers ask about

• Indre By and Nyhavn — The old core where everything is walkable; the brightly painted quay fills up in summer, and mid-afternoon the speed you feel drops with it.
• Vesterbro — Behind the central station, now food and café country; long-stayers like it because the station is walkable and it stays steady all day.
• Nørrebro — The multicultural district where a cemetery doubles as a park; its main street is the busiest cycle corridor in the city, so set your route before you push off.
• Christianshavn and Refshaleøen — Canals and an old shipyard turned food market; the open waterside works well, though inside the big steel warehouses the signal weakens.

Day trips out of the city

• Louisiana Museum at Humlebæk — Forty minutes north on the coastal line, connected nearly all the way because the track is above ground; some of the galleries, being below ground level, have nothing.
• Roskilde — Twenty-five minutes by train through continuous suburbs, so reception is good; the Viking ship museum sits on the water in the open and is easy to use.
• Malmö across the Øresund bridge — Thirty-five minutes into another country, so check the covered-destination list before you go rather than after the bridge. The undersea tunnel section before the span itself goes quiet for a while, which is normal.
