What Doha is like on a phone

Doha changes fast and is far easier to get around since the metro opened. Many travellers pass through on a connection, and some stay a couple of days for the old souq and the museums. Urban coverage is broad, including the metro tunnels and the malls. Worth knowing: voice or video calling through some apps may not behave the way it does at home, and it varies by network and by service — check before you rely on it.

Hamad International (DOH) is close to the city — around twenty minutes to the centre — and a Red Line metro station serves the terminal. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft: on a short connection you will want your gate immediately, and if you are heading into town you can choose between the train and a car on the spot. The metro carries service in stations and tunnels, so you can re-plan a route mid-ride. West Bay's towers and the Msheireb district work well. Souq Waqif is covered, though the roofed lanes slow a little at their busiest. Heading south toward the desert and the inland sea, the line thins noticeably once you leave the main road, and among the deeper dunes there is usually nothing. North toward Al Zubarah fort, coverage comes in patches, following the villages you pass.

A day here runs about 1–2GB across maps, rides, metro tickets and restaurant searches. During a major sporting or conference week the network gets busy in specific areas and uploads slow, so budget patience rather than gigabytes. Long-layover travellers working from the airport or a nearby hotel can reach around 3GB a day once they tether. For a desert trip, assume a stretch with no signal and prepare for it in advance.

• Souq Waqif — The restored old market, busiest after dark; the lanes interlock and the frontages resemble one another, so remember which gate or corner café you came in by.
• West Bay — The high-rise office and hotel district with several metro stops; steady enough for online meetings, and within walking distance of the Corniche once the evening cools.
• The Pearl & Lusail — The newer northern developments with marinas and waterfront dining; distances between points are longer than the map suggests, so check which metro stop is actually nearest before setting out.
• Katara & Education City — The cultural village and the university district, both of which host events in bursts; on a big day the crowds arrive and parking fills fast, so take the metro rather than driving.

Day trips out of the city

• The inland sea at Khor Al Adaid — Ninety minutes south, then off the tarmac into the dunes where the line is gone for most of it; go with an operator who knows the route and tell someone your return time before you set off.
• Al Zubarah fort — An hour and a half north on a straight road across dry plain; the line comes and goes with the villages and thins in between, so fuel up first and keep the route offline.
• Banana Island and the Al Thakhira mangroves — The island is a twenty-minute boat ride from a city jetty; the crossing thins but the island itself works. The northern mangroves are open water where the line wavers once you paddle into the channels.
