What Luang Prabang is like on a phone

Luang Prabang is a small town you can walk end to end, set on a spit between two rivers. Most people come for the quiet, the temples and slow travel rather than for nightlife. Its rhythm starts very early, because the dawn alms round is a local routine rather than a performance, and it closes fairly early at night. The town itself is covered throughout, but the moment you leave it for a mountain road or step into a boat, conditions change fast.

Luang Prabang airport (LPQ) is close enough to town that the transfer is short. Turn the line on before leaving the building to confirm your accommodation, because app-based ride services are not as widespread here as in bigger cities and you will be dealing with drivers directly. The other popular arrivals are the new railway, which stops at a station outside town and still needs a road leg in, and the two-day slow boat down the river from the north. Visa and arrival-document conditions change periodically, so check with the Lao immigration authority before each trip.

On the old-town spit, the main street and the lanes of temples and guesthouses carry service throughout. Rooms facing the river usually do better than ones set back inside thick-walled old buildings. Climbing the hill in the middle of town you keep a line, because you are still in the centre. Once you are on the river, though, the signal clings to the villages along the banks and goes where both sides are rock and forest. The roads climbing east and south into the mountains have long stretches with nothing, which is simply what this terrain does.

What a day here costs in data

Usage here is clearly lower than elsewhere in the region, roughly 500MB to 1GB a day, because the town is small enough to walk and you barely need the map open. What it goes on is looking up somewhere to eat, booking tomorrow's trip, and the evening upload. People working remotely are a different case and should test their line in the room before accepting anything camera-on. Waterfall and river days come in lower still, since you are outside coverage for hours.

• The old-town spit — The centre between the two rivers, lined with temples and guesthouses, all within walking distance and covered throughout; busy during the night market but still workable.
• The Mekong bank — The riverside road of restaurants facing the water; good, and where people sit and work in the afternoon. The pier for upriver trips is along here too.
• The Nam Khan side — The quieter side, with a seasonal bamboo footbridge across to the village opposite; the town bank is fine, while the far side of gardens and scattered houses is thinner.
• Around the hill in the middle — The low hill in the middle that everyone climbs for sunset; there is service at the top because you are still in town, though when the crowd goes up together a photo takes longer to send.

Day trips out of the city

• The waterfall to the south — About an hour out on a road that climbs and passes through villages, cutting out in patches on the way; at the falls themselves, down in a wooded ravine, it is very weak, so agree a return time with your driver beforehand.
• The river caves upstream — Several hours upriver by boat, the line holding at the bank villages and going where both sides turn to rock; inside the caves there is nothing, as with any limestone cave.
• South by train — The new line runs through a series of tunnels, this being mountain country; the signal stutters inside and returns straight away on exit. Download whatever you plan to watch beforehand, and remember the stations sit outside town at both ends.
