eSIM plans for Africa

Coverage across Africa varies sharply between major cities and everywhere else, and quality depends on which operator the plan can attach to in a given area. If your route leaves the cities, plan on stretches with no signal at all.

Regional plan or country plans in Africa

Africa is large and its mobile coverage varies more than in any other region on this site. Our supplier sells Africa lists of different sizes. When we checked on 10 October 2026, the larger list covered 29 countries, including South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya and Tanzania. A smaller list of 21 countries did not include South Africa. For North Africa, a separate Middle East and North Africa list added Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia to Gulf and Levant countries.

Most trips here are one country or a classic pairing such as Kenya with Tanzania, or South Africa with Botswana. A country plan is the clear choice for one country. For a pairing, compare a regional plan with two country plans, and check that the regional list includes both, because the smaller Africa list leaves out South Africa.

Entry basics for Thai passport holders in Africa

Entry rules below are for Thai ordinary passports. They are summaries of the official pages linked in each line; rules change without much notice, so confirm on the official site before you pay for flights.

Gotchas to know before a trip to Africa

  • Coverage inside safari parks and reserves is patchy at best. Lodges often have Wi-Fi; game drives often have no signal. Download maps, tickets and park permits before leaving town.
  • Look-alike visa and travel-authorisation sites are common for Egypt and Kenya. Use only the government portals linked above.
  • Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination, depending on your route. Check the destination's official health or entry page well before travel, as the vaccine certificate is only valid from a set time after the jab.
  • Airports in smaller countries may not have reliable Wi-Fi, so install the eSIM and turn it on before departure rather than counting on terminal Wi-Fi at arrival.
  • Load-shedding, planned power cuts that have affected South Africa, can also weaken mobile signal when towers lose power. Keep a power bank charged.

FAQ

Questions about eSIM in Africa

How does a Africa regional plan differ from a country plan?+

A regional plan uses one profile across the countries on its list, so you never swap eSIMs mid-trip. You usually pay a higher price per gigabyte for that. If the whole trip sits in one country, the country plan is normally better value.

Why do some Africa countries have no plan yet?+

We track 56 countries here and sell for the 45 where a supplier actually has inventory. We do not publish empty pages for the rest just to catch searches.

Are the listed networks guaranteed?+

No. They are the networks a plan may attach to under the supplier's roaming agreements. What you actually get depends on your device, your location and how busy the network is.

Does every Africa plan include South Africa?+

No. When we checked on 10 October 2026, the 21-country Africa list did not include South Africa, while the 29-country list did.

Do Thais need a visa for South Africa?+

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs lists Thai ordinary passports as exempt for stays of up to 30 days. Confirm on the DHA page linked above before booking.

Which plan covers Egypt with a Gulf stopover?+

A Middle East and North Africa list includes Egypt with the Gulf states. The plain Middle East list we checked did not include Egypt.

Will I have signal on a game drive?+

Often not. Signal depends on towers near the park; treat it as a bonus and prepare offline before you set out.
