What Bengaluru is like on a phone

People come to Bengaluru for different reasons than elsewhere in India: work, meetings, or a comfortable stop before heading further south. Traffic sets the shape of the day here, which is why locals check real travel time before agreeing to anything. Urban coverage is dense and the metro reaches most of its stations with service, making some journeys far more predictable than a car. The climate is mild, so people walk outdoors more than they expect to — and use the map more too.

Kempegowda International (BLR) sits about forty kilometres north of the city and now runs much of its international traffic through Terminal 2. Into town you can take a Vayu Vajra bus on one of several routes or a taxi from the forecourt bays. Switch the line on while you are still inside, because the drive can take one to two hours depending on the hour and someone is probably waiting on your arrival time. The expressway keeps signal throughout, so a work call from the car is reasonable.

MG Road, Indiranagar and Koramangala are solid all day, and the metro carries service through most of its underground stations. Where it changes is the lower floors of older office blocks and the basement car parks under malls, weak enough that apps crawl. The corridors out to Whitefield and Electronic City stay connected, being commuter arteries. During a heavy evening downpour everyone opens a map at once to find a way around, which can make an hour feel sluggish.

What a day here costs in data

A working day here costs more than a sightseeing one: online meetings, a tethered laptop and re-checking the route every time you leave a building. Around 2–3GB a day is common, rising toward 4GB when there is a long video call in it. Pure sightseeing is far lighter, roughly 1GB a day for maps and rides. If Mysuru or Coorg is on the plan, download those routes while you are still in the city.

• Indiranagar — A street of restaurants and bars with a metro stop in the middle of it, so you can come and go without gambling on traffic; on Friday nights the crowd makes a ride home take longer.
• Koramangala — Startups and cafés across a confusing block-numbering system; the same pin can sit in a different block, so confirm the block number with your destination before you ride.
• MG Road & Church Street — The walkable old centre with an interchange linking two metro lines — the right base for a day of several meetings you do not want traffic to decide.
• Whitefield — The eastern office-and-hotel belt, a long way from the centre; if your meetings are here, stay here — commuting in and out twice a day costs hours.

Day trips out of the city

• Nandi Hills at dawn — An hour and a half north then a twisting climb; the last bends wobble, and at dawn the summit is crowded enough that ordering a ride back is difficult — keep your driver or take a rented car.
• Mysuru — The newer expressway brings it down to about three hours with near-continuous coverage. Mysuru itself is comfortable; the wooded stretch up Chamundi Hill dips briefly.
• Coorg and the coffee estates — Five or six hours south-west into hill country, where many stays sit at the end of a dirt track and the line thins once you drop into a valley; ask the property for precise directions before you leave.
