What a year in Kuwait looks like

Kuwait's heat is dry heat, not the coastal mugginess of the lower Gulf, so the summer numbers run very high while the feeling differs from Doha or Dubai. Winter is short and colder than people expect, with nights that can approach freezing. After the winter rains, the southern desert greens up with grass and flowers around February and March, and Kuwaiti families move out into it to camp for weeks at a time. It is the side of the country outsiders rarely know exists.

The year, in windows

• November to December — The weather returns to a level where walking the bay and seeing the city actually works, and dry air means nights cool off fast once the sun goes. The first rains of the season usually arrive in these weeks and briefly make roads slick. You start to see the local camping tents going up out in the desert, a few at a time.
• January to February — The coldest weeks of the year, and genuinely cold on some nights: a north wind makes it feel sharper than the reading suggests. Daytime city walking stays comfortable, while the desert starts changing colour after the rain. This is when family camps spread across the southern desert, and the roads out of the city fill every weekend.
• March to April — The prettiest window when the rains have been kind: grass and small flowers spread across the desert floor and daytime warmth is close to ideal. By late April heat builds quickly and the dust winds from the north come more often, dropping visibility for a day at a time. Green years and poor years differ a great deal, so treat the bloom as a bonus rather than a plan.
• May to September — Genuinely extreme summer. Dry heat dehydrates you quickly without warning because sweat evaporates the instant it appears, and an afternoon in the open is not something to push through. Everything moves indoors and the city really lives after sunset. Dust storms early in the season can close visibility down and affect flights. Drink far more water than feels necessary.
• October — Heat falls away noticeably, especially in the second half, and because the air is dry the relief arrives faster than it does in the muggier coastal cities nearby. Rooms are still easy and the city is not busy. It suits anyone who wants to see Kuwait going about its ordinary business before the camping season starts pulling everyone out of town.

The weeks to aim for

If the city and its museums are the point, aim at November to March, when days are comfortable end to end. If you want the genuinely distinctive side of the country, come in February or March of a year when the winter rains have been good: the desert greens and fills with family camps, which is a sight the other months simply do not offer. Always pack a warm layer, because desert nights here are colder than almost anyone expects.

The weeks to avoid

June to August is the hardest stretch anywhere in this region — not merely uncomfortable, but dry enough that dehydration turns outdoor plans into a safety question rather than a comfort one. If you have to come, accept from the outset that it is an indoor trip, go out only after dark, carry water everywhere and do not plan long walks in daylight. The one clear benefit is available rooms and uncrowded venues. In the dust-storm weeks, leave extra margin around flights.

What the season does to a data plan

City coverage is strong and even, so the seasonal problems happen outside it. During the winter camping season tens of thousands of people move into the desert at once, and the masts covering those areas get congested on weekend nights. Download offline maps and share the camp's coordinates in advance, because landmarks out there are scarce and one dune looks much like another. On cold nights a battery drains faster than usual, so keep the phone in an inside pocket and carry a power bank. In summer and on dust-storm days, an overheated phone throttles itself, and delayed flights mean you burn more data waiting than you planned to.
