What Busan is like on a phone

People come to Busan because they want the sea and a big city in the same trip — some on the high-speed train down from Seoul for a couple of nights, some flying straight in. The terrain is steep hills between bays, and enough streets climb that walking is harder work than the map implies. The commercial districts and the beachfronts are well served. What makes this city distinct is elevation: hillside villages and the tunnels cut through the ridges change the signal faster than flat ground ever does.

Gimhae Airport (PUS) lies west of the city and links by light rail into the subway network. Switch the eSIM on in the cabin, because the first thing you will do outside the terminal is check the connection onwards. Arriving on the high-speed train instead, you step out at Busan Station near the port and the older quarter, with the line live since Seoul; on the way down, the track threads a series of mountain tunnels that interrupt it repeatedly before the city reassembles the signal.

Along the big beaches and through the business districts the line is even. Parts of the coastal subway surface above ground, which gives you the view and a strong connection at the same time. The change comes in the hillside villages where houses stack in layers: narrow alleys and close walls push the map's position off and weaken the signal in particular lanes. The bay bridges and the open shoreline are excellent. Road tunnels bored under the ridges cut out briefly as you drive through.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 1–1.5GB, similar to Seoul but spent differently: you check the map to find the way up a slope and to work out which bus saves you the climb. Film festival week and high summer push it higher, with beach video going out as it is shot. If you will be crossing town by bus often, keep a domestic transit app open — the routes wind around the hills and the real journey time rarely matches the guess.

Districts travellers ask about

• Haeundae — A beach with a wall of towers behind the sand; strong on the sand and in the blocks alike, though high summer packs it tightly enough to slow a video upload in the early evening.
• Seomyeon — Where two subway lines meet above a large underground shopping level; connected below and at street level, and the most convenient place in the city to settle bookings before scattering elsewhere.
• Nampo-dong and Jagalchi fish market — The old harbour quarter and the covered fish market; the line gets in, but the inner halls damp it a little, so open any payment app before you go in to choose.
• Gwangalli — The beach facing the illuminated bay bridge; wide open water makes this one of the most reliable spots in the city, and night photographs go out without waiting.

Day trips out of the city

• Gyeongju — An ancient capital about an hour away by train or bus; the burial mounds and the lake are open ground and easy, while the mountain temple to the east weakens as the road climbs.
• Tongyeong — A harbour town with a ropeway up the peak and boats out to small islands; town is fine, the cabin and summit swing with the aspect of the hill, and the island boats dim mid-crossing as sea routes do.
• Gijang and the seaside temple — Out at the northern end of the coastal line, with above-ground stretches along the sea that are both scenic and well served; at the temple itself, built on rocks above the surf, a few spots go quiet where the cliff cuts the line.
