A typical traveller runs about 1–2GB a day, with maps, translation and ride-hailing open most of the time. Overnight train days tend to use less on their own, simply because the signal disappears for long stretches.

到着後にすること

The main gateways are Moscow at Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO), St Petersburg at Pulkovo (LED), then Yekaterinburg (SVX), Novosibirsk (OVB), Kazan (KZN) and Vladivostok (VVO). Overland, international trains arrive from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and the crossings from China and Mongolia feed into the Trans-Siberian. Check visa and entry requirements against official sources before every trip, because they are the part most likely to have moved since you last looked.

Moscow and St Petersburg have dense coverage that works in most metro stations, and the main cities along the Trans-Siberian behave normally. Between them is where it genuinely disappears: the Siberian taiga, multi-hour rail stretches that pass no settlement at all, the Altai mountains, and Kamchatka, where service clusters around the towns and stops soon after. Download offline maps and save tickets to the device before any long leg.

Does eSIMonline sell an eSIM plan for Russia?+

No. We do not have inventory for Russia, and this page exists as travel information rather than as something to buy. If you are going anyway, travellers normally either buy a local SIM in an operator's shop by showing a passport, or check with their home mobile provider whether roaming to Russia is available on their account and what it costs. Either route is much easier to sort out before departure than after arrival.

What do I need to buy a local SIM in Russia?+

SIM cards in Russia are registered to a named person, so you buy one in an operator's shop with your passport rather than picking a starter pack off a shelf and activating it yourself. Allow time for the paperwork, and it goes far more smoothly if someone who speaks Russian is with you. Check the current conditions with official sources or your embassy before you travel, since registration rules for foreign customers can change.

Do cards issued outside Russia work there?+

Generally not. Cards issued by banks outside Russia usually fail both in shops and at ATMs, and they will not work inside local ride-hailing or booking apps either. Travellers therefore plan cash for the whole trip in advance rather than relying on withdrawing along the way, and book what they can — trains, rooms — through channels that still take payment from abroad before departure.

Is there signal the whole way on the Trans-Siberian?+

No. Service returns as the train passes towns and major stations, but in between there are hours of taiga and open country with nothing at all. People who ride the line download films, music and books before boarding, keep the ticket saved both on the phone and on paper, and warn family at home that they will only be reachable when the train pulls into a bigger station.
