Sharing eSIM internet to a laptop with a hotspot while abroad
Step-by-step hotspot from iPhone and Samsung to a laptop over WiFi, USB or Bluetooth, how to check that your plan allows tethering, and laptop settings that save data.

早わかり
- Yes, as long as the eSIM plan allows tethering. Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone or Mobile Hotspot on Samsung, then connect the laptop over WiFi, which is the simplest route, or use a USB cable or Bluetooth as alternatives. Always check the sharing terms on the plan's own page before buying, because plans differ.
- A laptop can burn through data faster than a phone if left on defaults, because updates and cloud sync run in the background. Mark the connection as metered and pause syncing before you share.
Can I share eSIM data with a laptop, and what do I need?
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. They are installed on your phone, and the phone acts as the hotspot for other devices such as a laptop, tablet or a second phone. So you need three things: a phone with the eSIM installed and active, a plan that allows tethering, and a laptop with WiFi, Bluetooth or a USB port to connect to the phone.
Note that the eSIM lives on the phone, not on the laptop. If your laptop has built-in cellular and supports eSIM, that is a separate route, covered in our guide to eSIM for laptops and travel routers.

Check first whether the plan allows tethering
Some plans allow tethering fully, some limit it and some do not allow it, and the rule can differ by partner network in each country. We do not state a fixed rule here. Read the details on the page of the plan you are considering, and if it is unclear, ask support before ordering.
- Read the plan's product page for the hotspot or tethering section.
- If tethering is your main use, size the plan by the data you really need and try the data calculator first.
- After installing, test the hotspot early to confirm it connects, ideally before you travel if the plan can be installed in advance.

Turn on the hotspot from an iPhone to a laptop
On iPhone the menu is usually called Personal Hotspot. Its name and location can differ slightly by iOS version. Cellular Data must be set to your travel eSIM line, not your home SIM.
- 1データ回線を、eSIMに設定するGo to Settings > Cellular, set Cellular Data to the travel eSIM line and turn data roaming on for that line.
- 2Switch on Personal HotspotGo to Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join. Set a WiFi password that is hard to guess.
- 3Join from the laptop over WiFiOn the laptop open the WiFi list, pick your iPhone's name and enter the password you set.
- 4Alternatives: USB or BluetoothIf WiFi is flaky, try a USB cable and tap Trust when prompted, or pair over Bluetooth. Either can be steadier or lighter on the phone battery in some situations.

Turn on the hotspot from a Samsung phone to a laptop
On Samsung the menu is usually Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, then Mobile Hotspot. Names can differ by One UI version and language. With two lines, go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager and set Mobile data to the travel eSIM line.
- 1Set mobile data to the eSIMIn SIM manager choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for that line in the mobile network menu.
- 2Switch on Mobile HotspotTurn on the Mobile Hotspot switch, then tap its name to view or change the network name and password.
- 3Connect from the laptopPick the hotspot name in the laptop's WiFi list and enter the password, or use a USB cable and turn on USB tethering on the phone.
| 方法 | Usually good for | 注意点 |
|---|---|---|
| WiFi hotspot | Simplest, no cable, several devices at once | Drains the phone battery and can be less stable where WiFi is crowded |
| USBテザリング | Stable, charges the phone while sharing | Needs a compatible cable and port, one device at a time |
| Bluetooth | Can be gentler on battery than WiFi in some cases | Slower, not ideal for heavy work |

Set up the laptop to save data
Laptops are often set to update and sync automatically when they see a connection, and on a hotspot that quietly eats your plan's data. Before sharing, work through this list.
- Windows: set the hotspot's WiFi connection as a metered connection so the system postpones large update downloads.
- Mac: turn on Low Data Mode for that WiFi network if your macOS version offers it.
- Pause file sync in iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox and turn off automatic photo backup.
- Switch off automatic app and game updates and automatic high-quality video playback.
- Download heavy items in advance on hotel WiFi, such as updates, documents or offline maps.
Sharing by destination: Japan, Korea, China, Europe, USA
The tethering method is the same everywhere, but what to check differs a little. Plan terms and partner networks can change, so treat this table only as a starting point for your checks.
| 渡航先 | What to check when tethering |
|---|---|
| 日本 | The plan's hotspot terms, and data roaming on for the eSIM line. Useful if you work on a laptop between stops. |
| Korea | The plan's tethering terms, and test the connection right after arriving since partner networks can vary. |
| 中国 | Some apps and sites may not load on the laptop just as on the phone. See the china-esim-without-vpn guide for the general approach and check official sources. |
| ヨーロッパ | Which countries a multi-country plan covers and each network's tethering terms, especially when you cross borders. |
| 米国 | Tethering terms of the network the plan uses, and coverage in remote areas, which can differ from cities. |
What to check by destination
Fixing it: laptop connects but has no internet
- Check that the phone itself can load a page. If it cannot, the problem is the eSIM, not the hotspot. See no-signal-troubleshooting.
- Check that cellular data is set to the eSIM line, not your home SIM.
- Switch the hotspot off and on, and have the laptop forget the network and rejoin.
- Turn off battery saver on the phone, as some models switch the hotspot off automatically when idle.
- Turn off any VPN on the laptop briefly to see whether it is the cause.
よくある質問
Can I share eSIM data to a notebook?+
Yes, if the plan allows tethering. Turn on the hotspot on the phone that holds the eSIM and connect the notebook over WiFi, USB or Bluetooth. Check the terms on the plan page before buying.
My data runs out fast when I tether a laptop. What can I do?+
Mark the connection as metered, pause cloud sync and automatic updates, and download big files over accommodation WiFi instead.
Where do I turn on the hotspot on a Samsung phone?+
Usually at Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Names vary by One UI version, and first set mobile data to the eSIM line in SIM manager.
Does every Japan eSIM plan allow hotspot sharing?+
Not necessarily. Each plan and network may have different terms, so read the plan page or ask support before ordering.
Can I use hotspot sharing with a Korea or China eSIM?+
The method is the same. Check the plan's terms first. For China, remember some apps or sites may not load on the laptop either.
What should I watch for when tethering in Europe or the USA?+
Check that the plan covers the countries you will visit, the network's tethering terms and coverage outside cities. Keep data roaming on for the eSIM line.
Does tethering drain the phone battery?+
It often does, especially WiFi hotspot. Try a USB cable so the phone charges as it shares, and see power-bank-on-a-plane-rules if you will fly with a power bank.
