What Nara is like on a phone

Nara is different from every other city on this list because most visitors never sleep here: they come from Kyoto or Osaka in the morning and go back at dusk, which means the eSIM has been live since the previous city and there is no switching-on moment at all. The town is small enough to walk for a whole day, with the deer park at its centre and temples scattered around it. Park and streets are well served. What changes is the woodland behind the halls and the grass slope rising above them.

People arrive at Kintetsu Nara, the station closest to the deer park, or at JR Nara, a little further out but tied into the main-line network. The data line is already running from wherever you started, so nothing needs enabling en route; the suburban stretch between the cities keeps a clean signal and has no long tunnels. The one thing worth doing on arrival is checking the later return departures, because losing track of time among the temple grounds is how visitors miss the train they planned on.

The station blocks and the shopping street behave normally. The deer park, being wide open ground, is the strongest part of town and the obvious place to send photographs as you take them. Deep inside the great timber halls the line softens with the sheer depth of the building. Climb the grass hill behind for the view over the rooftops and it comes straight back, because there is nothing between you and the sky. The old forest trails behind the temples are where genuinely weak stretches start.

A day here costs roughly 400–800MB, below a big-city day because you mostly walk and the route barely needs thinking about. The real variable is deer footage: almost everyone shoots more than they meant to, and many send clips home on the spot. Long videos uploaded where you filmed them move the number quickly. The simplest fix is to shoot now and upload back at the guesthouse in whichever city you are staying.

• Nara Park — Wide grass where the deer move among the visitors; the connection is strong across all of it. Keep a firm grip on the phone — the deer are more interested in anything held in a hand than people expect.
• Naramachi — Old merchant houses and small shops down narrow lanes; the line is fine but the map drifts where buildings press together, so follow the named main street and turn in only when you are close.
• Kintetsu Nara Station area — Where most visits begin, with a food and sweets arcade by the exit and an easy connection — the practical spot to fix the return time and book lunch before walking into the park.
• Nishinokyo — The western temple district, quieter than the park side and well served because the ground is open; the trains, however, run less often, so note the departure times before you leave the platform.

Day trips out of the city

• Asuka — An ancient village where people rent bicycles to ride between burial mounds and ruins; out in the fields the line works, while bamboo thickets and the shortcuts behind low hills weaken it. Download the cycling map first.
• Horyuji — An ancient wooden temple out on the plain, reached by train and a short bus; the journey is well served throughout and the grounds are fine, though inside the old halls the line fades just as it does in the city temples.
• Yoshino — A mountain where the cherry trees bloom in tiers up the slope; a train and a cable car get you up, but the line swings with altitude and ridgelines. In bloom week the crowd alone slows things. Take the flowering dates from local announcements, since they move every year.
