What Okinawa is like on a phone

Okinawa draws beach holidays, divers, and families who drive a loop of the main island. Unlike the mainland cities, there is exactly one elevated rail line, in Naha; everything else is road and a rental car. So data use here is tied to turn-by-turn navigation rather than to finding the right station exit. The main roads and the resort strips are well served. The small beaches at the end of unsealed tracks, and the outer islands, are where it gets interesting.

Driving north up the coast road, the line stays continuous through the built-up south and starts swinging once the road climbs into the hills and forest of the north.

The densely built south is steady: Naha itself and the west-coast road are reliable. The resort belt around Onna is well served because so much accommodation sits along it. On a boat to the outer islands the line thins mid-water and returns as the far pier approaches.

A driving day runs about 1–1.5GB, because navigation works continuously for hours and the map tends to stay open. The heaviest pattern of all is a family tethering so the children can watch something during the drive; downloading episodes at the hotel the night before costs a fraction of streaming them on the road.

• Chatan — A seafront strip of restaurants and shops on the west coast; the open water keeps it smooth, though the sunset hour gathers enough people to slow a photo upload slightly.
• Onna — The resort belt where most people sleep; the main road and the hotels themselves are reliable, though small coves tucked between headlands weaken where the cliff blocks the line.
• Nago — The northern town people use as the last proper stop before the forest; the streets are normal, and it is the right place to refuel and download the northern map section before driving on.

Day trips out of the city

• Motobu Peninsula and the aquarium — About two hours north of Naha with a good line along the coast road; inside the aquarium, deep behind thick walls, it fades, so have the ticket bought or saved before you go in.
• Kerama Islands — About an hour by boat from Naha, with a clear dip mid-crossing; the harbour and village on the island work, but beaches on the far side have places with nothing at all, so agree meeting times before you split up.
• Kouri Island and the sea bridge — A long bridge over clear water and a favourite photo stop; out on the span the sky is open and the line is strong, but parking is limited and holiday traffic backs up, so check conditions before setting off rather than guessing at the timing.
