What Galway is like on a phone

Galway is a small city with far more going on than its size suggests. Most visitors use it as a base before heading out along the Atlantic coast: self-drivers, day-tour groups and students on long stays. You can walk the centre end to end in twenty minutes, and it is full of pubs with live music. Connectivity in town is rarely the issue. Drive west into Connemara, though, and the ground turns to bog, lakes and stone quickly.

There is no working commercial airport here. Most people fly into Shannon (SNN), about an hour's drive, or into Dublin and take a coach across on the M6 in roughly two and a half hours. The other route is the train from Dublin Heuston via Athlone into Galway Ceannt station, which sits right in the centre. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the airport you land at, because several coach operators sell in an app and some stops have no desk at all. The motorway run is connected; the slow part near town is traffic, not signal.

Around Shop Street and Eyre Square it works across the board, and the seafront promenade at Salthill is particularly open and clear. Drive out into Connemara on the two-lane roads through bog and lakes, and long stretches simply go. The same is true of the cliff roads south, where limestone hills create pockets with nothing. On the crossing to the Aran Islands the middle of the water goes quiet and comes back as you approach the far pier.

What a day here costs in data

A day in town costs little, roughly 400MB to 900MB, since you walk and most places have wifi. A day driving the coast costs more: navigation stays open, you re-check the forecast repeatedly, and you photograph every pull-in. Budget around 1.5GB to 2GB for a driving day, and be generous with battery, because a phone hunting for service on an empty road works hard.

• The Latin Quarter — The main pedestrian run of pubs and street musicians; it fills up at night enough for the speed you feel to sag, so save your address before you head out.
• Salthill — The most open stretch in the city, right along the bay; steady enough that it is the best place to make an evening video call home.
• The West End — Across the bridge, where the smaller restaurants and bars are; fewer people than the Latin Quarter, so it runs more smoothly at night.
• The Claddagh and Spanish Arch — The river mouth where the small boats tie up and people sit by the water; open ground, so it works well, but the sea wind cools a phone quickly and the battery follows.

Day trips out of the city

• The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren — An hour and a half on narrow, winding coast roads with dead stretches between the limestone hills; the cliff edge itself is open and usable, though the wind is strong enough that you should hold on tight to the phone.
• Connemara and Kylemore Abbey — Roads across bog and lake with long stretches of nothing at all, so download offline maps before you leave Galway every time. Understand as well that emergency calling does not behave like a data session — take that from official sources only, not from what someone told you.
• The Aran Islands — The ferry leaves from Rossaveel and the middle of the crossing goes quiet; on the island itself there is service in patches around the villages, but the cycle route out to the cliff fort drops. Sailings change with the season and from year to year, so check with the operator directly before planning around one.
