What Chicago is like on a phone

Chicago is a big city that is genuinely more walkable than people expect: the towers cluster in the Loop and along the river, and the rest of it drops to low-rise quickly. Visitors are a mix of architecture pilgrims, people who came to eat, and people flying in for meetings. The mobile network is more even here than in many coastal cities, because the ground is flat and no hill sits between you and a mast. Two things are worth knowing in advance — the stretch where the trains run underground, and how fast a deep-winter cold snap drains a battery.

Most international flights arrive at O'Hare (ORD) Terminal 5, with domestic ones spread across Terminals 1 to 3, and several low-cost carriers use Midway (MDW) instead. Turn the eSIM line on in the passport queue at Terminal 5, then follow the signs to the Blue Line into town. The first part of the Blue Line runs in the median of the expressway where the signal is fine, but as it approaches the Loop it drops underground and the line cuts in and out. From Midway the Orange Line is elevated for nearly its whole length, so it stays usable throughout. By taxi, the run along the Kennedy expressway is connected the whole way.

The Loop, River North and the lakefront are continuously usable, and the elevated sections of the L are fine almost everywhere. Where the Blue and Red lines dive beneath the downtown streets, though, the connection comes and goes between stations. Tall buildings packed along the river push the GPS fix around when you call a car, so confirm the cross street with the driver. At McCormick Place and at the stadiums on a full day, speeds fall in proportion to how many handsets are loading at once, and the lakefront during an outdoor festival gets just as congested.

What a day here costs in data

A walking day in Chicago usually comes to about 1–2GB, because the distances between sights are short and the map is not open continuously. The architecture boat tour and the observation decks push photos and clips up noticeably in the afternoon. In winter, though, what runs out first is not data but battery: deep cold shuts phones down mid-outing more easily than people expect. Keeping the power bank in an inside pocket, where it stays warmer, genuinely helps.

Districts travellers ask about

• The Loop and Millennium Park — Dense in the centre, though directly under the elevated tracks, where the steel structure roofs the street, strength drops compared with the open road alongside.
• River North — A hotel and restaurant district where usage peaks after dark; booking a table or calling a car around eight in the evening feels slower than at other hours.
• Wicker Park and Logan Square — Low buildings and wide streets keep the line even right across the neighbourhood, so you can wander between shops without worrying about the map dropping.
• Hyde Park and the South Side — The university and museum area works well, but in the basement galleries of the larger museums the line weakens enough that you step back out to the main hall.

Day trips out of the city

• Milwaukee by train — The lakeside route strings small towns together and stays usable nearly the whole way; you cross a state line but not a border, so the plan keeps working with no new setup.
• Indiana Dunes — The open beaches and dune ridges hold up, but the inland trails under heavy tree cover thin out; load the trail map before you leave the car park.
• Starved Rock State Park — The drive southwest crosses farmland where the line thins in patches, and down in the park's canyons it genuinely drops; always download an offline map before setting off.
