How much data a translation app really uses on a trip
Typing a phrase costs almost nothing. Pointing the camera at a whole menu is a different story, and offline packs help less than people expect.

Which camera method uses less data?+
Taking a photo and translating from it uses noticeably less than holding up the live view, because live mode keeps sending frames the whole time the camera is raised. Translating a still is a single upload of roughly 1–3 MB, and it is easier to read as well.
With offline packs installed, does the app still use the internet?+
Yes, by default, because whenever a signal exists the app prefers the better online model. To force it onto the device alone, switch on the on-device translation mode in settings, or turn that app's data off in the phone's own settings and accept a coarser result.
How many languages should I download before a trip?+
Only as many as you will genuinely use: usually the destination language, your own, and English as a bridge. Together that is roughly 100–250 MB, done once on home Wi-Fi. Downloading ten languages just in case achieves nothing except filling up storage.
How much of a 7-day plan should I set aside for translation?+
With packs downloaded before you fly and the photograph-then-translate habit, roughly 100–200 MB is plenty. With nothing downloaded and a taste for pointing the live camera at every sign you pass, budget roughly 400–600 MB. Translation is not the app that decides your plan size, but you do want a connection that actually works so it can translate at its best.
