What Honolulu is like on a phone

Honolulu is a real city and a resort at the same time, and most visitors stay near Waikiki while spending half the trip outside it — driving around Oahu or flying on to another island. Through the hotel district and along the main roads the signal is dense, but the island has a central ridge that shadows it plainly, so the roads winding along the far side feel very different. The other thing people forget is that beaches and trails away from the main roads often have no service at all. Plan the island days around that rather than around the city ones.

Waikiki, downtown and the Ala Moana district are dense and usable throughout. The ring road on the east and north sides thins in places along the cliffs and bays that the ridge hides, particularly where the road hugs the mountain. The climbs up Diamond Head crater and the Koko Head stairs keep some service because they sit close to town, but the inland valleys around Manoa and the roads running into the forest reserve go quiet quickly. On a boat heading out to snorkel or watch whales, losing the signal once you are off the coast is simply normal.

A day in the city is light — a little over a gigabyte, with short walks and Wi-Fi in cafés and hotels — but a day driving the ring road climbs to roughly 2GB, with navigation left open and frequent photo stops. Beach video is always the largest single item, especially shot at high resolution and uploaded from the sand. Setting photos to sync only back at the hotel helps a lot. Carry a power bank too, because running a map in full sun all day empties a battery fast.

Districts travellers ask about

• Waikiki — The densest hotel district, strong all day, though at sunset when everyone on the sand films and posts at once, speeds dip for a while.
• Downtown and Chinatown — A working district that empties at weekends, so the network is clear and quick; a few older buildings with thick walls are weaker inside than out on the street.
• Kahala and the Diamond Head side — Quiet residential streets that work well, but the crater approach — the short tunnel and the bowl inside — weakens noticeably.
• Ala Moana and Kakaako — Malls and new towers with a good signal, though the underground car parks go quiet enough that you cannot order a car — do it while still on the shop floors.

Day trips out of the city

• The North Shore and Haleiwa — The north coast road thins along the bays the mountains hide, while Haleiwa town itself is normal; set the return route before you leave the city and you will not think about it again.
• The east side and Hanauma Bay — The cliff road east is beautiful but cuts out in places along the rock face, and the bay's booking rules and opening hours change from year to year — check the managing agency's notices before you go.
