What New York is like on a phone

New York is where most first trips to the United States begin, and for plenty of travellers it never goes further than the five boroughs. Above ground the phone behaves about as well as a phone can anywhere: the map redraws as fast as you walk, and a clip finishes uploading before you reach the next corner. What surprises people is that the problem is vertical rather than horizontal — lift shafts, basement restaurants, the lower floors of older buildings, and the tunnels the subway spends most of its day inside. Treat the line as excellent in bursts rather than evenly perfect and the week goes smoothly.

Most international arrivals come through JFK — Terminal 4 takes a large share of long-haul carriers, with Terminals 1, 7 and 8 handling the rest — or through Newark (EWR), where Terminal B holds most overseas flights; LaGuardia (LGA) is mainly domestic. Switch the eSIM line on and enable data roaming for that line while you are still at the gate or queueing in the immigration hall, where there is enough signal to finish anything the profile still needs. From JFK the AirTrain to Jamaica or Howard Beach stays connected, but a taxi or ride-hail into Manhattan passes through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel or under the East River, and navigation will sit frozen for a minute or two. The Lincoln Tunnel run in from Newark does the same, so set the destination before you enter.

Street level in Manhattan, Long Island City and downtown Brooklyn is as dense as mobile coverage gets, and Central Park stays usable well off the paths. Subway platforms are mostly fine, but what happens between stations varies line by line and with how deep the tunnel runs, so a message sent as the doors close may not leave until the next stop. Older buildings with thick stone walls — museum basements, some theatre lobbies, the lower levels of Grand Central — are quieter than the street outside would suggest. And when tens of thousands of people load one cell at once at Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium or Barclays Center, everything slows even while the bars still look full.

What a day here costs in data

A walking sightseeing day in Manhattan usually lands around 1–2GB, most of it maps left open, transit and ride-hail apps, and photos syncing in the background. Add video calls home across the time difference and a few clips posted from the High Line and the figure climbs quickly. Anyone who works from cafés for part of the trip and tethers a laptop should budget noticeably more than a pure sightseeing day. Watching a film in the room is the one habit worth moving onto the hotel Wi-Fi.

• Midtown and Times Square — Dense all day, but when the theatres empty at once speeds dip for a while as everybody posts and calls a car at the same moment.
• Lower Manhattan and the Financial District — Narrow streets between tall towers push the GPS fix around, so ride-hail pins often land on the wrong corner; type the cross street to confirm it.
• Williamsburg and Bushwick — Low-rise Brooklyn keeps the line steadier than Manhattan; the real gap is the stretch where the L train dives under the river.
• Upper West Side and Central Park — A residential network with room to breathe; deep inside the Ramble, where the tree cover closes in, you will feel it thin out.

Day trips out of the city

• The Hudson Valley (Beacon and Cold Spring) — The Metro-North river line holds signal most of the way, but the climb above Breakneck Ridge thins out in patches — download the trail map before you leave the station.
• Philadelphia by train — The corridor is fine nearly all the way, dropping only in the deeper cuttings and the tunnels on the approach; in the city itself it behaves normally.
• Montauk and the Hamptons — The far end of Long Island goes patchy, especially on the back roads and the open beaches with nothing built near them; keep an offline map if you are driving yourself.
